Charith Asalanka full name Kariyawasam Indipalage Charith Asalanka is a professional cricketer from Sri Lanka. He was born on 29 June 1997, in Elpitiya, Sri Lanka. Asalanka is a left-handed batsman and occasionally contributes with his off-spin bowling. He plays all three formats of the game for the national team and also serves as the vice-captain of the national team in T20I.
Asalanka toured England in 2013, and scored the most runs in a three-day cricket match against an English under-17 team, making 92 and 31. He also played for his school, Richmond College, Galle, in the 2014-15 twenty-20 competition and helped them reach the finals. Asalanka led the Sri Lankan under-19 cricket team against teams from Australia and Bangladesh during the 2014-15 season. In a series against Bangladesh under-19, he was the top run-scorer for Sri Lanka with 225 runs and the second-highest wicket-taker with eight wickets. He received the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award in both 2015 and 2016, making him one of only seven players to win the award twice
Charith Asalanka Career
Charith Asalanka had his first-class cricket debut. Playing for Galle, they scored only 31 runs in the first innings. Asalanka scored 114 in the second innings, helping Galle reach 295. They won the match by four runs after he took 4 wickets for 34 runs.
He made his Twenty20 debut for Sinhalese Sports Club in March 2018. He also played in various domestic tournaments, including the Super Provincial One Day Tournament and SLC T20 League in 2018, where he was the leading wicket-taker for Kandy.
Asalanka was drafted by the Jaffna Stallions for the Lanka Premier League in October 2020. In March 2021, he captained Sinhalese Sports Club to victory in the SLC Twenty20 Tournament.
He scored an unbeaten century in a match against Police Sports Club in March 2021 and another match-winning century against Colts Cricket Club in April 2021. In August 2021, he was named the vice-captain of the SLC Greys team for the 2021 SLC Invitational T20 League.
In November 2021, he was selected to play for the Kandy Warriors in the Lanka Premier League. Asalanka continued to perform well in domestic cricket, scoring a half-century and taking two wickets in the National Super League in 2022. He was signed by the Colombo Stars for the third edition of the Lanka Premier League in July 2022.
Charith Asalanka's cricket career includes captaining the Sri Lanka under-19 team and achieving remarkable success in 2015 with a double-century and a century against Pakistan under-19. He also led the team in the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
In 2018, he was named captain of the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, showcasing his leadership skills. His international debut for Sri Lanka came in 2021, both in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 Internationals (T20Is) against England and India. He impressed with his maiden ODI fifty against India.
Asalanka played a crucial role in the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup and continued to excel with a maiden T20I half-century against Bangladesh in October 2021. He followed it up with another T20I half-century against the West Indies in November 2021.
In the same month, Charith Asalanka made his Test debut against the West Indies, demonstrating his versatility in all formats. Asalanka's ODI performance remained strong, including scoring his maiden ODI century against Australia in June 2022.
His consistency was evident with his sixth ODI half-century against Afghanistan in November 2022. In April 2023, he scored his fourth T20I half-century in a Super Over against New Zealand. In June 2023, he notched his eighth ODI half-century against Scotland.
August 2023 saw Charith Asalanka continuing his excellent ODI form with his ninth half-century against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup. Despite a remarkable 10th ODI half-century against South Africa during the World Cup, the match ended in a loss. Asalanka has established himself as a key player for Sri Lanka in international cricket.
