Sanju Samson is an Indian cricketer, Who plays for the Indian cricket team in limited-overs formats. He was born on 11 November 1994 in Pulluvila Trivandrum, India. He is a right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman who is known for his aggressive batting style and exceptional wicketkeeping skills. He was the vice-captain of the Indian U-19 team for the 2014 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He made his international debut for India in a T20 match against Zimbabwe in 2015 and has since played for the team in both T20s and ODIs.
He was born into a Malayali Christian family His father's name is Samson Viswanath and his mother's name is Lijy Viswanath and he has a brother, Saly Samson. Sanju Samson is married to Charulatha Remesh, who is a native of Tamil Nadu. The couple got married in 2018, and they have a son named Kavith.
Sanju Samson Career
Sanju Samson started his cricket journey by joining Kerala's U-13 team in 2007, He quickly made a name for himself when he captained Kerala in the KSCA Inter-State under-13 tournament. There, he scored an impressive 973 runs, which included four centuries in just five matches. His incredible performance earned him the title of the man of the tournament.
Samson became part of Kerala's U-16 team for the 2008-09 Vijay Merchant Trophy. He smashed a double century off just 138 balls against Goa. finishing as the second-highest run-scorer with a total of 498 runs, featuring two centuries and two half-centuries.
Samson's leadership qualities also shone through as he served as the captain for Kerala at both the U-16 and U-19 levels. His exceptional performance in the 2010-11 Cooch Behar Trophy caught the attention of selectors, leading to his selection in the India U-19 team. He represented India in the 2012 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup, held in Malaysia. He was named vice-captain of the India U-19 team for the 2013 Top End Under-19 Series in Australia in June 2013
Sanju Samson played a pivotal role by scoring a century in the final match against Pakistan in the 2013 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup in the UAE. contributing significantly to India's successful defense of the Cup. He was also entrusted with the role of vice-captain for the Indian team in this tournament.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Samson as the vice-captain of the Indian U-19 team for the 2014 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He continued to impress by being the top run-scorer for India in the tournament, with his highest score being 85 runs from just 45 balls in a match against Papua New Guinea.
Samson's domestic cricket journey started with remarkable achievements. He made a name for himself with a double century in the 2008-09 Vijay Merchant Trophy, earning a spot in the Kerala squad for the 2009-10 Ranji Trophy when Sanju Samson was just 14, becoming the youngest Kerala cricketer to do so. He also featured in the Kerala squad for the 2009-10 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and made his first-class debut in the 2011-12 Ranji Trophy.
Sanju Samson scored his maiden first-class century in the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy, Samson continued to impress, being the top run-scorer for Kerala in the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy season, including a career-best double-century. He was also part of South Zone's squad in the 2013-14 Deodhar Trophy. Samson was named the captain of Kerala for the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy season, becoming the youngest to captain Kerala in the Ranji Trophy.
He found his form again in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy, becoming Kerala's leading run-scorer and delivering a crucial performance in a must-win match against Saurashtra. Kerala reached its first-ever Ranji Trophy quarter-final that season. His leadership qualities were recognized when he captained the Board President's XI in a match against Sri Lanka in November 2017.
He made headlines in October 2019 by scoring a rapid double-century, the second-fastest in List-A cricket, and the fastest by an Indian. This remarkable performance led to his national call-up after a four-year absence, where he played in the Bangladesh series. In the 2020-21 season, Sanju Samson was appointed captain of Kerala, leading them to the quarter-finals in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2021-22.
His success continued as he was named captain of the India A squad in September 2022, leading the team to a series victory against New Zealand A, with Samson being the top run-scorer in the series.
He started his IPL journey with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009 but didn't get a chance to play until he joined the Rajasthan Royals in 2013. In his early IPL days, he was awarded the Best Young Player in the 2013 season. Over the years, he played for different teams, including Delhi Capitals in 2016. During the 2017 IPL, he scored a remarkable century. He returned to Rajasthan in 2018 and continued to shine, achieving his second IPL century in the following season.
Sanju Samson took on the role of captain for the Rajasthan Royals in 2021 and made history by scoring a century in his first match as captain. He went on to lead the team to the IPL finals.
