Rahmat Shah Zurmatai is an Afghan cricketer who represents the Afghanistan national cricket team. He's a right-handed batsman and occasionally bowls leg-break. Born on July 6, 1993, in Zurmat, Paktia, Afghanistan, he made his international cricket debut for Afghanistan in March 2013. Rahmat was among the eleven players who participated in Afghanistan's first-ever Test match against India in June 2018.
In September 2019, during a one-off Test match against Bangladesh, Rahmat achieved the milestone of becoming the first Afghan batsman to score a century in Test cricket. Rahmat Shah has played for Afghanistan in various formats of cricket. He has experience in List A cricket, competing against teams like Pakistan A, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi. Rahmat made his debut in Twenty20 cricket with Band-e-Amir Dragons in the 2017 Shpageeza Cricket League in September 2017.
In July 2018, he stood out in domestic competitions. He was the top run-scorer for Mis Ainak Region in the 2018 Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament, scoring 258 runs in five matches. He was the leading wicket-taker for the team in the same tournament, taking eight wickets in five matches.
Rahmat Shah Career
Rahmat Shah's cricket journey includes making his debut in One Day International (ODI) matches for Afghanistan against Scotland on March 6, 2013. On July 4, 2016, he achieved his first century in an ODI during a tour of Scotland by Afghanistan.
In May 2018, Rahmat was part of Afghanistan's squad for their first-ever Test match, which was played against India. He made his Test debut in this historic match on June 14, 2018. Then, in February 2019, he was named in Afghanistan's Test squad for a one-off match against Ireland in India.
In April 2019, Rahmat was included in Afghanistan's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He emerged as the leading run-scorer for Afghanistan in the tournament, accumulating 254 runs in nine matches.
Rahmat's journey also involved being named as the Test captain by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in April 2019, replacing Asghar Afghan. After the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Rashid Khan was appointed as the new captain of Afghanistan's cricket team in all formats. Rahmat did not get the chance to captain the team in a Test match.
