Hardik Himanshu Pandya made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for India on January 27, 2016, when he was 22 years old. In his debut match against Australia, he took two wickets, with his first wicket being Chris Lynn. He showed his batting skills in the T20I against Sri Lanka by scoring 27 runs off 14 balls. He also played a crucial role in the Asia Cup 2016 by smashing 31 runs in just 18 balls and picking up a wicket to help India secure a victory.
Pandya made his One Day International (ODI) debut for India against New Zealand on 16 October 2016 at Dharamshala. He became the fourth Indian to be named player of the match on ODI debut after Sandeep Patil, Mohit Sharma, and K. L. Rahul. In his first ODI innings as a batsman, he scored 36 runs from 32 balls.
Pandya was chosen for India's Test team against England in late 2016, but an injury during training at the PCA Stadium forced him to miss out. He got another chance when he was selected for the tour of Sri Lanka in July 2017. Pandya made his Test debut on July 26 in Galle. In the third and final Test against Sri Lanka at Pallekele, he scored his first Test century. He made history by becoming the first Indian batsman to achieve a Test century just before lunch.
