The Sri Lanka cricket team has faced a big setback in the World Cup 2023. Their captain, Dasun Shanaka, will be out of the tournament due to injury.
Dasun Shanaka suffered a quad injury during a match against Pakistan and will be sidelined for at least three weeks. To replace Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka has brought in all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne, with approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Karunaratne has been traveling with the team as a reserve player and may play in Sri Lanka’s upcoming match against Australia.
Kusal Mendis, a strong batsman, is the vice-captain and will take over as captain in Shanaka’s absence.
In a remarkable turn of events earlier in the World Cup 2023, Pakistan successfully chased down a huge target of 345 runs against Sri Lanka, thanks to centuries by their batsmen Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique. This win set a new record for the highest run chase in World Cup history.
