Joe Root (Joseph Edward Root) is a professional English cricketer who plays for England and Yorkshire in domestic cricket. He was born on 30 December 1990 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Root is one of the top run-scorers in Test cricket and was a key part of the England team that won the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
He made his Test debut in 2012 and his ODI debut in 2013. Root also played for England's Twenty20 International team from 2012 to 2019. He captained England's Test team from February 2017 to April 2022. Root has numerous records, including the most Test matches, wins, and losses as England's captain. In 2021, he was named the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year and the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World. In June 2022, he became the second English batsman and the fourteenth overall to score 10,000 Test runs.
As a right-handed batsman, Root started as an opener but later played in the middle order. He is England's second-highest run-scorer in Tests and ODIs, with several records, including the most ODI centuries for England (16) and a world record for the highest tenth-wicket stand in Tests (198) with James Anderson. Root also occasionally bowls off-spin.
Joe Root is the oldest child of Helen and Matt Root and grew up in Dore, Sheffield. His younger brother Billy plays cricket for Glamorgan. Joseph went to Dore Primary and King Ecgbert School in Sheffield. At the age of 15, he attended Worksop College on a cricket sports scholarship. He followed his father's path and joined Sheffield Collegiate CC, where he was influenced by the former Yorkshire batsman and England captain, Michael Vaughan. Root also admired the football club Sheffield United.
