State Minister for Climate Change Zartaj Gul on Monday announced a blanket ban plastic bags in Islamabad from 14 August 2019.
Plastic bags would be banned in the federal capital from 14th August 2019 onward, she said while addressing a ceremony.
She also praised PM Imran’s effort to fight climate change through implementing practical steps. Pakistan ranked 7th in the list of countries affected due to natural disasters, she informed.
Minister for Climate Change Zartaj announced about this decision back in May while addressing a session of assembly. She told the members parliamentarians that after 14th August 2019 use of plastic bags will be banned in the capital territory.
On that occasion Zartaj also presented an alternative to plastic bags, she urged to use cotton bags instead.
She further told media, a statutory regulatory order (SRO) under the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act 1997 was being drafted to give legal cover to the proposed ban.
She said five thousand cotton bags had been distributed among employees of the federal government and more are being procured for distribution in weekly Bazars and other markets free of cost.
