In a groundbreaking move, the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has launched Pakistan’s first-ever “dematerialised digital identity card.” The announcement was made during Nadra’s silver jubilee celebrations on Monday, marking a significant leap forward in the country’s identity management system.
The introduction of this digital ID card is expected to revolutionise national identification, offering citizens a more secure, efficient, and technologically advanced way to verify their identities. The transition from physical to digital identity solutions aligns Pakistan with global advancements in digital governance, paving the way for improved security and convenience in public and private sector services.
The silver jubilee ceremony was a momentous occasion, commemorating Nadra’s 25-year journey of innovation and service. The event featured the unveiling of a commemorative coin issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), symbolising the institution’s enduring legacy. Additionally, Pakistan Post released a special postage stamp to mark the occasion, while a book documenting Nadra’s milestones and achievements over the years was also presented.
The ceremony took place at Nadra headquarters, where founding chairman Major General (Retd) Zahid Ihsan graced the event as the chief guest. He was joined by key dignitaries, including Nadra’s current chairman, Lieutenant General (Retd) Asif Munir, the special secretary of interior, the chief statistician of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the director-general of Immigration and Passports, former chairpersons of Nadra, board members, and senior officials.
The gathering underscored the vital role Nadra has played in transforming Pakistan’s identity registration system over the past two and a half decades. With the launch of the digital ID card, the authority is set to usher in a new era of technological advancement, making identity verification seamless and accessible for millions of Pakistanis.
