The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has taken an important step toward modernizing Pakistan’s governance system by launching a fully automated system for birth and death registrations. This new system aims to make the entire process faster, more transparent, and more convenient for citizens.
Developed in close coordination with provincial governments, the initiative follows the directives of the Federal Minister for Interior and supports the government’s larger goal of promoting digital transformation and public service efficiency.
According to NADRA officials, this project is a key part of the National Biometric and Registration Policy Framework, which was approved by the Prime Minister on January 1, 2025. The framework’s main goal is to establish a unified, technology-based system that ensures timely and accurate registration of all vital life events—births and deaths—across Pakistan.
As a pilot project, NADRA has already installed modern digital registration systems in more than 50 hospitals and healthcare centers nationwide. Some of the leading hospitals included in this program are the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Capital Development Authority (CDA) Hospital, and Federal Government (FG) Hospital in Islamabad, Lady Aitchison Hospital in Lahore, and several others in Quetta, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Sindh.
The newly launched system directly connects hospitals and health centers with NADRA’s central database. This allows immediate reporting of births and deaths as soon as they occur. Once an event is recorded in the system, NADRA automatically sends a notification via SMS or its mobile app to the concerned parents or heirs. The message provides complete guidance on how to finalize the registration process at their local Union Council.
This automated process has already shown promising results. So far, NADRA has successfully received 4,000 birth notifications and 407 death notifications through the new system—marking a major achievement in digitized public service delivery.
To make things even easier, citizens can now register vital events using the NADRA mobile app or by visiting their nearest Union Council office. Initially, this digital service was launched in three districts of Punjab, but NADRA has confirmed that it will soon expand across the entire province. Work is also underway to connect additional public and private hospitals, clinics, and health centers nationwide to the system.
Officials further stated that once provincial governments complete their operational preparations, Union Councils will begin offering direct digital registration services as well. This will ensure a fully integrated network connecting healthcare institutions, NADRA, and local government departments—making the process more seamless than ever.
This new initiative is being hailed as a major step toward Pakistan’s digital transformation. It will not only speed up service delivery but also reduce bureaucratic delays, prevent data manipulation, and strengthen the country’s national identity and population record systems. Ultimately, it reflects the government’s commitment to building a smarter, more efficient, and transparent administrative framework for citizens.
