The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has officially announced that it will remain closed to the public on Thursday, May 1, 2025, in observance of Labour Day. Along with the central bank, all commercial banks across the country will also be closed for public transactions on this day.
This announcement was made through a short notification issued by the central bank. The notice stated that the Government of Pakistan has declared May 1 as a public holiday to mark Labour Day. Therefore, the State Bank of Pakistan and all other banking institutions will not be open for any kind of public dealings on this date.
In addition to the SBP and commercial banks, other financial organizations will also be closed. These include development finance institutions (DFIs) and microfinance banks (MFBs). People who have bank-related tasks should plan accordingly, as no services will be available at these institutions on May 1.
Furthermore, educational institutions throughout the country will also observe this public holiday. Schools, colleges, and universities will remain closed as a part of the nationwide observance of Labour Day.
Labour Day, also called May Day, is celebrated around the world on May 1 each year. It is a day set aside to show respect and support for workers and laborers. The purpose of the holiday is to recognize the hard work and dedication of the working class and to promote their rights and well-being. This day serves as a reminder of the struggles workers have faced in history to earn fair treatment, better working conditions, and reasonable wages.
In Pakistan, like in many other countries, Labour Day is marked by a public holiday to give workers a chance to rest and reflect on their contributions to society. Many labor unions and social organizations also arrange rallies, events, and discussions on workers’ rights during this day.
