Mohanlal is a famous Indian Indian actor, film producer, playback singer, film distributor, and director. He was born on 21 May 1960 in Trivandrum, Kerala, India. Mohanlal made his acting debut at age 18 in the Malayalam film Thiranottam in 1978, but the film was delayed in its release for 25 years due to censorship issues.
His screen debut was in the 1980 romance film Manjil Virinja Pookkal, in which he played the antagonist. He continued to do villainous roles and rose to secondary lead roles in the following years. By the mid-1980s, he established himself as a bankable leading actor and attained stardom after starring in several successful films in 1986; the crime drama Rajavinte Makan released that year heightened his stardom. Mohanlal prefers to work in Malayalam films, but he has also appeared in some Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films.
Some of his best-known non-Malayalam films include the Tamil political drama Iruvar (1997), the Hindi crime drama Company (2002), and the Telugu film Janatha Garage (2016). Mohanlal has also starred in numerous hit films, including Oppam (2016), Manamantha (2016), Vismayam (2016), Janatha Garage (2016), and Pulimurugan (2016), which was one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films ever.
His other projects include the trilingual war drama 1971: Beyond Borders (2017), Velipadinte Pusthakam (2017), Villain (2017), Aadhi (2018), Neerali (2018), and Odiyan (2018). His 2019 releases include Ittymaani: Made in China, Syeraa Narasimha Reddy, and Lucifer. The latter became the highest-grossing Malayalam film at the time.
In 2020, his much-awaited sequel Drishyam 2. His other releases include Bro Daddy (2022), Aaraattu (2022), 12th Man (2022), Monster (2022), Alone (2022), Barroz: Guardian of D Gama s Treasure (2023), and Ram: Part 1 (2023), Malaikottai Vaaliban (2024) and Rambaan (2025).
Mohanlal’s father, a former bureaucrat, was the law secretary of Kerala. He spent his childhood in Mudavanmugal, Thiruvananthapuram. Mohanlal completed his schooling at Thiruvananthapuram Model School before becoming a commerce graduate from Mahatma Gandhi College.
The actor, also known as Lalettan, was an avid cricketer in his college days. He was also the state wrestling champion of 1977-78. Mohanlal wife Suchitra, daughter of film producer K. Balaji. The couple tied the knot on 28 April 1988. He has two children, Pranav and Vismaya.
