Mammootty is a famous Indian actor and producer. He was born on 7 September 1951 in Kottayam, Kerala, India. He was a lawyer by profession. After establishing himself as a leading actor in the 1980s, his major breakthrough came from the commercial success of the 1987 film in New Delhi.
He has won three Best Actor National Film Awards, seven Kerala State Film Awards, and thirteen Filmfare Awards South Awards. In 1998, the Indian government awarded him Padma Shri for his contributions to the arts. He also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Kerala in January 2010 and the University of Calicut in December 2010.
Mammootty is the president of Malayalam Communications, which runs the Malayalam TV channels Kairali TV, People TV, and WE TV. He is also the Goodwill Ambassador for the Akshaya Project, the first districtwide digital literacy project in India. He is the sponsor of the Pain and Palliative Care Society, a Kerala charity created to improve the quality of life for advanced cancer patients. He has also worked with the Kozhikode Pain and Palliative Care Center in India.
In the year 2018, Mammootty made a cameo appearance in the Malayalam-language biographical sports drama Captain and starred in Tamil drama films such as Street Lights, Parole, Uncle, Abrahamine Santhathikal, and Oru Kuttanadan. His other acting credits include Unda (2019), Pathinettam Padi (2019), Peranbu (2019), and Mamangam (2019). His 2020 release includes Shylock. His other projects include The Priest (2021). His other notable works include Bheeshma Parvam (2022), CBI 5: The Brain (2022), Puzhu (2022), Priyan Ottathilanu (2022), Rorschach (2022), Christopher (2023), Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam (2023), Kadugannawa Oru Yatra (2023) and Bilal (2023).
Mammootty is the eldest son of Ismail Paniparambil and Fatima. He has two younger brothers and three younger sisters. Mammootty married Sulfath in 1979. They have a daughter named Surumi and a son named Dulquer Salmaan, who is an actor.
