Kang Soo-yeon is an South Korean actress, She was born on18th August 1966 in Seoul, South Korea. During the mid-1980s and 1990s, she became an international star, often referred to as Korea’s “first world star.” Kang Soo-yeon is known for The Surrogate Woman (1987), Aje aje bara aje (1989) and All That Falls Has Wings (1990) and Jung_E (2023).
The very talented star, Kang began her acting career as a child actor and gained national recognition with A High School Student’s Diary on KBS 1TV (1983–1984), and the comedy films Whale Hunting 2 (1985) and Mimi and Cheolsu’s Youth Sketch (1987).
However, she would remain unknown outside her own country until her breakout role in Im Kwon-taek’s The Surrogate Woman (1987). She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 44th Venice International Film Festival for her role, making her the first Korean actor to receive an award at a major international film festival.
In 1989, she received the Bronze St. George as an actress at the 16th Moscow International Film Festival for Come Come Come Upward (1989), which further established her “world star” title.
Throughout the ’90s, Kang acted in many films, her best-known award winners being Road to the Racetrack which won her Chunsa Film Art Awards and Blue Dragon Film Awards for Best Actress. Kang was invited to be a juror at the 5th Pusan International Film Festival in 2000.
In 2001, Kang starred in the popular 150 episodes TV Drama aired on SBS TV titled Ladies of the Palace (Yeo-in Cheon-ha). The TV Drama gave her a new source of visibility and helped her win an award. She won an SBS Performance Award for Best Actress in Jung Nan-jung from the TV Drama
After six long years, she attempted to revive her career and break into mainstream TV by working as an actress in an MBC Drama in 2007. Throughout the 2010s, she only appeared in two films. She reunited with director Im Kwon-taek for Hanji (2011).
Kang Soo-yeon was set to return to the screens later this year with the release of Netflix film Jung_E, a sci-fi film which takes place in a dystopian future in which Earth is no longer habitable, although small groups survive in shelters.
