Aamir Khan is a most famous Indian actor, producer, director and television personality. His full name is Mohammed Aamir Hussain Khan. He was born in 14th March 1965 in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. Aamir Khan began his acting journey as a child artist in the 1973 film Yaadon Ki Baaraat, directed and produced by his uncle Nasir Hussain. The film became one of the most iconic releases of the 1970s. The following year, he appeared in another film titled Madhosh. After a decade-long gap, Aamir made his professional acting debut with Ketan Mehta’s Holi in 1984. Although the film featured a strong ensemble cast and received critical appreciation, Aamir’s role in it went largely unnoticed. Nonetheless, this marked the beginning of his journey toward becoming one of India’s most celebrated actors.
In 2009, Aamir Khan starred as Ranchodas Chanchad in 3 Idiots, a film that became a landmark in Indian cinema. It broke multiple box office records, surpassing the previous highest-grosser Ghajini, and emerged as the highest-grossing Bollywood film at the time. Remarkably, 3 Idiots also found immense success in East Asian markets, particularly China and Japan, making it the highest-grossing Bollywood film overseas. In May 2012, it became the first Indian film to be officially released on YouTube.
The film was critically acclaimed and swept several awards, winning six Filmfare Awards including Best Film and Best Director, ten Star Screen Awards, eight IIFA Awards, and three National Film Awards. In 2016, Aamir Khan starred in the biographical drama Dangal, based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, Geeta and Babita Phogat. The film was a massive critical and commercial success, breaking multiple box office records and becoming the fifth highest-grossing non-English film globally as of 2017. Dangal won numerous accolades, including Filmfare Awards for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor.
In 2017, Aamir reunited with Dangal co-star Zaira Wasim in Secret Superstar, a musical drama also starring Meher Vij, produced under his home banner, Aamir Khan Productions. The film was well-received both in India and internationally. However, his 2018 release, Thugs of Hindostan, failed to impress at the box office despite high expectations. In 2021, Aamir returned with Laal Singh Chaddha, the official Hindi remake of Forrest Gump. Though it generated curiosity, the film received mixed reviews upon release.
Aamir Khan launched his production company, Aamir Khan Productions, in 2001 with the critically acclaimed Lagaan, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His next project, Taare Zameen Par, addressed the issue of dyslexia and earned widespread acclaim. The production house’s third film, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, marked the debut of his nephew Imran Khan and became a youth favorite. Dhobi Ghat, an art-house film written and directed by his wife Kiran Rao, followed as the fourth venture. The socially driven Peepli Live, released in 2010, gained praise for its bold subject matter. The production banner also delivered the sleeper hit Delhi Belly, which stood out for its edgy humor and realistic dialogues.
In 2012, Aamir made his television debut with Satyamev Jayate, a socially conscious talk show that tackled pressing issues like child abuse, female foeticide, and corruption. His impactful hosting redefined Indian television, and he was reportedly paid INR 3 crore per episode, making him the highest-paid host in the country at the time. Aamir Khan Productions continues to be known for its quality storytelling and socially relevant themes.
Aamir Khan married Reena Dutta on 18 April 1986. She had a small role in his breakthrough film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. The couple had two children, a son named Junaid and a daughter, Ira. Reena was briefly involved in Aamir’s career as a producer for Lagaan. However, in December 2002, Aamir filed for divorce, and Reena was granted custody of both children.
On 28 December 2005, Aamir married Kiran Rao, who had worked as an assistant director to Ashutosh Gowariker on the sets of Lagaan. The couple welcomed their son, Azad Rao Khan, on 5 December 2011 through surrogacy. In July 2021, Aamir and Kiran announced their separation but affirmed their commitment to co-parenting their son Azad. Despite their personal differences, both have maintained a collaborative and respectful relationship, particularly in their joint philanthropic and creative efforts.
