Yorkshire County Cricket Club has officially announced that Pakistani opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq will join the team as an overseas player for the rest of the season.
The experienced left-handed batter is set to join the squad right away and is likely to play in this week’s match against Surrey at Scarborough. His arrival gives a major boost to the team as they look to strengthen their lineup for the crucial part of the season.
Imam will also be available for the Metro Bank One Day Cup, and he is expected to take part in the remaining matches of the Rothesay County Championship, which will be played in September.
Imam-ul-Haq is no stranger to top-level cricket. He has a strong first-class batting average of 43, showing his consistency with the bat. Earlier this year in March, he captained Pakistan Television (PTV) to victory in the President’s Cup, one of Pakistan’s top domestic first-class competitions. His leadership and solid performance played a big part in that win.
Imam is also well-known as the nephew of legendary Pakistani batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq, which adds to his strong cricketing background. His experience and skills are expected to play a key role in Yorkshire’s remaining matches.
Gavin Hamilton, the General Manager of Cricket at Yorkshire, expressed his happiness about signing Imam.
“We’re delighted that Imam has joined us and that he will be available immediately,” Hamilton said.
“Of course, we were disappointed that Ruturaj Gaikwad couldn’t join the team, but bringing in a player like Imam is a great opportunity. He has proven international experience and is already familiar with domestic cricket here in England, which will help us a lot in the coming matches.”
“We appreciate how quickly he was able to travel and join us, and everyone at the club is excited to work with him for the rest of the season,” he added.
Imam’s International Career and Recent Form
Although Imam is a talented player, he has recently been left out of Pakistan’s national team due to a drop in form. This led to his absence from recent international tours. Despite this, his overall international record remains impressive.
- In Test cricket, he has played 24 matches, scoring 1,568 runs at an average of 37.33, with three centuries and nine fifties.
- In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he has appeared in 75 matches, scoring a total of 3,152 runs at a fantastic average of 47.04, including nine hundreds and 20 half-centuries.
- In T20 Internationals, he has played just two matches, scoring 21 runs.
His last ODI appearance for Pakistan came in April 2025 against New Zealand, while his last Test match was played in 2023 against Australia. His T20I debut happened in 2019, but he hasn’t played that format for the national team since then.
Now at the age of 29, Imam-ul-Haq is looking for a fresh start. Joining Yorkshire gives him a great chance to prove himself once again and get back into top form. With his vast experience and hunger to perform, both Yorkshire and Imam are hopeful for a successful end to the season.
Fans will be watching closely to see how the talented opener performs in English conditions, and whether this opportunity will help him revive his international career.
