Stargazers are in for a spectacular sight as the first of three supermoons in 2025 is set to brighten the night sky on Tuesday, October 7, according to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). This rare astronomical event will be visible across Pakistan and many other parts of the world, offering skywatchers a chance to enjoy one of nature’s most stunning displays.
A supermoon happens when the Moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, known as the perigee. When this occurs during a full moon, the Moon appears noticeably larger and brighter than usual. Experts say a supermoon can look up to 14% bigger and nearly 30% brighter than an average full moon, creating a breathtaking glow across the night sky.
According to SUPARCO, the supermoon will reach its peak visibility at 8:47 p.m. (Pakistan Standard Time). It will rise from the eastern horizon shortly after sunset and travel across the sky before setting in the west just before dawn. During this celestial event, the Moon will be at a distance of about 224,599 miles (361,457 kilometers) from Earth, making it appear 6.6% larger and 13% brighter than a regular full moon.
Adding to the charm of the night, Saturn will also be visible close to the Moon on Monday and Tuesday evenings, creating a stunning combination for astronomy lovers and photographers alike. The planet’s golden hue next to the glowing Moon will make the view even more captivating.
SUPARCO further shared that the brightest supermoon of 2025 will take place on November 5, when the Moon will come even closer to Earth — around 221,817 miles (356,980 kilometers) away. This event is expected to be the most dazzling lunar sight of the year, offering a perfect opportunity for stargazing.
The October supermoon will be visible not only in Pakistan but also across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, giving millions of people the chance to witness the glowing beauty of the Moon. Following this event, two more supermoons will light up the sky in November and December, rounding off an exciting year for astronomy enthusiasts.
In short, whether you’re a professional astronomer or just someone who enjoys gazing at the sky, October 7 will be the perfect night to step outside, look up, and enjoy the natural wonder of the supermoon — a reminder of how magical our universe truly is.
