WhatsApp to Introduce Built-in Document Scanner – No Need for CamScanner Anymore

WhatsApp is working on a new document scanning feature for Android phones. This update was discovered in the latest beta version 2.25.18.29, released through the Google Play Beta Program. Although the feature is still under development, it is expected to be launched in an upcoming update.

Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced the same document scanning feature for iOS users. Now, the company is working to bring the same tool to Android devices. With this feature, users will be able to scan documents using their phone’s camera without needing any third-party apps like CamScanner or Adobe Scan. Everything will happen right inside the WhatsApp app, making it much easier and faster to share documents.

How It Works: Two Scanning Modes

Once this feature is live, users will find a new option called “Scan document” in the file-sharing menu inside chats. Tapping on it will open the phone’s camera and offer two ways to scan:

  • Manual Mode: You can take the picture when you’re ready. This is good if you want to carefully position the document or make sure everything fits perfectly in the frame.
  • Automatic Mode: This is a faster option. WhatsApp will automatically detect the edges of the document and take the photo on its own. It’s helpful when you’re in a hurry or want quick results.

PDF Conversion Made Easy

After you scan the document, WhatsApp will automatically convert the image into a PDF file. This makes it very convenient to send official files or scanned papers directly to friends, family, or colleagues in a chat or group.

The best part is that this feature uses Android’s built-in tools (APIs), so everything happens on your device only. Your scanned files will remain safe and private. They will only be shared if you choose to send them, and all documents will still be protected with WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption—just like your messages.

When Will It Be Available?

Right now, the feature is still being tested and is not available to the public yet. However, its development has been confirmed, and WhatsApp is expected to roll it out in a future update. More information about the launch date and how it will work may be shared in the coming weeks.
