New Zealand’s top six all perished to spin at the Oval, a statistic that would not have gone unnoticed by Afghanistan, whose own bowling attack is heavily reliant on a trio of spinners led by Rashid Khan.
Yet Stead is convinced his batsmen will be able to cope with Rashid, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Stead, who revealed experienced seamer Tim Southee will miss out with a calf injury as Henry Nicholls is poised to return from a hamstring problem, added: “We’ve played spin well in the past.
“I think maybe the pressure of the moment a wee bit the other night made for some poor decisions.
“But we’ve certainly done the homework on the likes of Rashid and Mujeeb and Nabi, the likes of those guys who are definitely going to be a force for Afghanistan.”
