Thailand has restarted a rule that requires people applying for a tourist visa to show proof of enough money before they travel. This rule will start again in May 2025.
Previously, in November 2023, Thailand removed this rule to make it easier for tourists to visit. At that time, many people were traveling again after the pandemic, and the Thai government wanted to boost tourism and help the country’s economy. But now, the rule is back in place to make sure that tourists are financially stable and will not overstay or work illegally during their visit.
If you are applying for a Thai tourist visa, you now need to prove that you have at least 20,000 Thai Baht (about 550 USD) for your trip. This amount is meant to cover your living expenses like food, transport, and basic needs while you’re in Thailand.
You can show this money by:
- Recent bank statements (from the past 1–3 months)
- A letter of sponsorship (if someone is paying for your trip)
- A financial guarantee from a guardian or company
Make sure your documents clearly show your name and account balance. If you are using a sponsor, the letter should include their contact information, ID proof, and a short statement saying they will support you during your stay.
This rule applies to travelers from countries that are not part of Thailand’s visa-free list. So if your country doesn’t allow you to enter Thailand without a visa, you will need to follow this financial proof rule.
Thai Embassies Around the World Now Enforcing the Rule
Thai embassies in different countries have already started following this updated rule. This includes embassies in:
- The United States
- France
- Norway
- And many others
If you are applying for a tourist visa at one of these embassies, you must include your financial proof along with your visa application documents. If you don’t include it, your visa request may be rejected or delayed.
It’s best to check with the Thai embassy or consulate in your country to make sure you have the latest information and a complete list of required documents.
Other Required Documents for a Thai Tourist Visa
Besides financial proof, travelers must still provide all the regular documents required for a tourist visa. These documents help the authorities make sure that you are a genuine traveler and that you plan to return home after your trip.
Here is a list of what you need:
- Passport copy – Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after the date you plan to enter Thailand.
- Recent photo – Usually, you need one or two passport-sized photos taken within the last 6 months.
- Proof of residence – A utility bill or rental agreement showing where you live.
- Round-trip flight ticket – To show that you will leave Thailand after your trip.
- Hotel bookings or accommodation details – This includes your hotel confirmation or the address where you will stay.
Some embassies might ask for additional documents like a travel itinerary or a travel insurance policy. It’s a good idea to prepare everything in advance to avoid delays.
Possible Changes to Tourist Visa-Free Entry Duration
Right now, citizens of 93 countries can enter Thailand without a visa and stay for up to 60 days. This is called visa-free entry. These travelers don’t need to apply for a tourist visa at all.
However, the Thai government is now thinking about reducing this visa-free stay from 60 days to 30 days. Officials say that some tourists have misused this rule by staying longer than allowed or doing activities that are not permitted under a tourist visit, such as working illegally.
Although nothing has been officially confirmed yet, the government may make an announcement in the coming months. If you plan to travel to Thailand using visa-free entry, you should stay informed in case the rules change before your trip.
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) Now Required
Thailand has also introduced a new online form for all foreign visitors. Starting May 1, 2025, everyone must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before arriving in the country.
This new system replaces the old paper form known as the TM6 card, which travelers used to fill out on the plane or at the airport.
What Does the TDAC Include?
When filling out the TDAC, you’ll need to provide the following information:
- Full name and nationality
- Passport number
- Flight information
- Travel dates
- Hotel or place of stay in Thailand
- Purpose of visit (tourism, business, etc.)
This digital card helps Thai immigration keep better records and speeds up the arrival process.
Important Notes:
- You must complete the TDAC online before your trip.
- If you don’t fill it out and don’t have internet access when you arrive, immigration officers may try to help, but you could face long delays.
- The TDAC is required for everyone, whether you are entering with a visa, visa-free, or visa-on-arrival.
Make sure you save or print a copy of your TDAC confirmation to show at the airport when you land in Thailand.
Final Tips for Travelers
- Always check with the Thai embassy or consulate in your country before applying for a visa.
- Make sure you have enough money saved to meet the financial requirement (20,000 THB).
- Keep all your documents organized and up to date.
- Fill out your Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before you travel.
- Stay updated about possible changes to visa-free rules.
These new rules are part of Thailand’s effort to manage tourism more effectively and ensure that travelers are genuine and prepared. By following the steps above, you can enjoy a smooth and hassle-free trip to the Land of Smiles.
