Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has officially announced a 17-player squad for the upcoming T20 International (T20I) series against Bangladesh. This three-match series will begin on July 10, 2025, and the games will be held in Pallekele, Dambulla, and Colombo on July 10, 13, and 16, respectively.
Middle-order batter Charith Asalanka has been named captain for this important series. Asalanka, known for his calm leadership and consistent batting, will be leading the national team in T20Is for the first time. Fans will be eager to see how he handles this new responsibility.
One of the biggest highlights of the squad is the return of Dasun Shanaka, the former T20I captain. Shanaka has not played a T20I match since July 2024, and this marks his return to international cricket after almost a year. His experience as a leader and powerful lower-order batting could be valuable for Sri Lanka in this series.
Another familiar face making a comeback is Chamika Karunaratne, an all-rounder known for his energetic bowling and useful contributions with the bat. His inclusion adds balance to the squad, especially in close games where his fighting spirit can make a difference.
However, not all players from the previous tours have been included. Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who had a disappointing outing in New Zealand, has been left out of the squad. He managed to score just 14 runs in two T20Is during that series. His exclusion shows that the selectors are expecting better performances and form from the team members.
The squad features some of Sri Lanka’s top cricketers. Pathum Nissanka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, and Maheesh Theekshana are all included. These players have been crucial in recent matches and will be expected to play key roles again.
Fast bowler Eshan Malinga, who performed impressively in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has also earned a spot in the team. His speed and accuracy make him a strong asset in the pace department. He will likely partner with Nuwan Thushara and Matheesha Pathirana to form a dangerous fast-bowling trio.
Sri Lanka enters this T20I series with growing confidence. They recently won the two-match Test series 1-0 against Bangladesh. The ongoing ODI series is currently tied at 1-1, and the final match will be played on Tuesday in Pallekele. A win there could further boost team morale going into the T20Is.
