Montreal Tigers are the defending champions of the Global T20 Canada 2023, having defeated Surrey Jaguars by five wickets in the 2023 final.

Organized by Cricket Canada, Global T20 Canada is an action-packed tournament currently featuring six teams – Mississauga Panthers, Toronto Nationals, Vancouver Knights, Brampton Wolves, Montreal Tigers, and Surrey Jaguars.

The tournament was introduced to develop Canadian cricket and bring local players to the limelight, while also offering players opportunities to other associate cricketing nations.

The first-ever edition of the competition took place in 2018 in King City, Ontario. Vancouver Knights were the inaugural champions after beating West Indies B comfortably in the final.

From there, another successful edition took place in 2019 in Brampton, Ontario. It was the now-defunct Winnipeg Hawks that won the title, beating Vancouver Knights in the final.

In the 2023 edition, Montreal Tigers have crowned GT20 Canada 2023 winners after beating Surrey Jaguars in a well-fought final, winning by five wickets off the last ball of the game.

Global T20 Canada 2018: Vancouver Knights

Under the leadership of Chris Gayle, Vancouver Knights clinched the first edition of Global T20 Canada in 2018.

Vancouver Knights beat West Indies B by seven wickets in the 2018 final at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City, Ontario.

Earlier, the Knights stormed into the playoffs after finishing at the top of the league standings with nine points from six matches.

However, Chris Gayle’s Knights lost to West Indies B in Qualifier 1, before overcoming Winnipeg Hawks in Qualifier 2 en route to securing their title in the final.

Global T20 Canada 2019: Winnipeg Hawks

Winnipeg Hawks won the second edition of Global T20 Canada in 2019. Led by captain Rayad Emrit, Winnipeg Hawks dethroned defending champions Vancouver Knights in a one-over eliminator after the 2019 final ended in a tie.

Previously, Winnipeg Hawks squeezed into the playoffs after finishing fourth in the standings.

The Hawks then beat Toronto Nationals in the Eliminator, before overcoming Brampton Wolves by seven wickets in Qualifier 2 for a spot in the final and eventual title glory.

Global T20 Canada 2023: Montreal Tigers

After a nearly four-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the GT20 Canada League was back for the 2023 edition held in Brampton.

GT20 Canada 2023 began with two new teams introduced Mississauga Panthers and Surrey Jaguars, replacing Edmonton Royals and one of the past GT20 Canada winners, Winnipeg Hawks.

Montreal Tigers bagged their maiden Global T20 Canada title after beating Surrey Jaguars by five wickets in Brampton, Ontario.

Earlier, the Chris Lynn-led Tigers finished third in the standings to advance to the Global T20 Canada 2023 playoffs.

The Tigers later defeated Brampton Wolves by nine wickets in the Eliminator, before pipping Vancouver Knights by one wicket in Qualifier 2 to storm into the final and lift the trophy.

After an all-round bowling effort helped restrict Surrey Jaguars to 130/5 in the GT20 Season 3 final, Sherfane Rutherford and Andre Russell’s 29-run stand-off of 12 balls sealed the win for Montreal Tigers in the final over.

Needing 24 from 12 balls, Rutherford (38 not out off 29 balls) and Russell (20 not out off 6 balls) smashed three sixes and 1 four in the final two overs to get Montreal Tigers across the line and to their first-ever GT20 title.

For Jaguars, skipper Ifhtikar Ahmed starred with the ball, claiming 2 wickets for 8 runs in his 4 overs, but that effort was not enough to stop the Tigers from reaching a paltry target. However, the debutants of the league made the Tigers work hard in the run chase.

Earlier, put into bat, Mohammad Haris (23) and Jatinder Singh (56*) started cautiously and at the end of the powerplay, the Surrey Jaguars were 35/0. Jatinder Singh anchored the innings, with an unbeaten half-century.

A. Afzal Khan got the Tigers their first breakthrough when he trapped a well-settled Haris (23) in the sixth over. Litton Das (12) joined Jatinder Singh and continued to rotate the strike and minimize risks. At the halfway mark of ten overs, the Jaguars were 58/1.

Soon after, Afzal Khan scalped Das (12) in the eleventh over. Skipper Iftikhar Ahmed (8) looked to move the scoreboard along and lost his wicket as well to Carlos Brathwaite’s low full toss.

Ayaan Khan (26) walked in for the Jaguars and played a much-needed quick-fire knock towards the death overs in just 15 deliveries before he was cleaned up by Abbas Afridi in the nineteenth over.

Andre Russell bowled a terrific last over, conceding only 7 runs and scalping Matthew Forde (1) in the process. The Surrey Jaguars finished on a competitive total of 130/5.

The Montreal Tigers’ response had a tempestuous start. Following a dropped catch, Muhammad Waseem (0) was bowled by a ripper from Spencer Johnson. At the end of the powerplay, the Tigers were poised at 35/1.

Coming in at number three, Srimantha Wijeyeratne (12) failed to convert his start, however, opener Chris Lynn (31) batted well to make a key contribution but was dismissed in the eleventh over.

In the same over, Iftikhar scalped Dilpreet Singh (15), who was also getting his eye in, to switch the momentum back in favor of the Jaguars. With five overs to go the Montreal Tigers needed 53 runs with six wickets in hand.

Rutherford and Dipendra Singh (16) struggled to score runs against Iftikhar, who conceded just one run in the sixteenth over. Rutherford took apart Forde in the eighteenth over, with a six and a four to bring the equation down to 25 runs needed on 12 balls.

Dipendra Singh retired out, to bring out the dangerous Russell. Spencer Johnson bowled the penultimate over and conceded 12 runs to the duo of Russell and Rutherford.

With two runs needed of the last ball, pacer Ammar Khalid could not contain Russell who dispatched his second maximum of the over, to claim the silverware for the Montreal Tigers. Here’s the GT20 2023 full list of award winners, prize money, and stats:
