Slovenia Launches 1-Year Digital Nomad Visa – How to Apply

From November 21, 2025, Slovenia is introducing a special residence permit for international remote workers. This new visa allows digital nomads to live in Slovenia for up to one year while working remotely for companies or clients located outside of Slovenia.

This is the first official visa program in Slovenia made especially for digital nomads and freelancers. It gives people the chance to enjoy Slovenia’s beautiful scenery, peaceful cities, and rich culture — all without becoming part of the local job market.

Slovenia’s new digital nomad visa is a big step forward for remote workers. With clear rules, flexible stay options, and the chance to live in a peaceful European country, it’s a great opportunity for freelancers, remote employees, and self-employed professionals to work from paradise without immigration stress.

Who Can Apply?

This visa is meant for non-EU/EEA citizens who work online or from home. To be eligible, you must be working remotely and fit into one of the following groups:

  • You are employed by a company that is based outside Slovenia
  • You work as a freelancer or independent contractor for clients who live in other countries
  • You are self-employed and offer digital or online services to clients abroad

Important: You cannot work for any company or client inside Slovenia. If you do, your visa may be canceled.

How Long Can You Stay?

The digital nomad visa lets you stay in Slovenia for 12 months (1 year). However, it cannot be extended right away.

If you want to return, you must wait at least 6 months after the visa expires before applying again. This gives digital nomads the option to leave and come back later if they wish.

How Much Money Do You Need?

To get the visa, you must prove that you can support yourself financially. This helps Slovenia make sure that remote workers don’t depend on government support.

You will need to show documents like:

  • Work contracts or service agreements with foreign employers or clients
  • Recent salary slips or proof of monthly income
  • Bank statements showing regular deposits or savings

Slovenian authorities will announce the minimum income requirement soon.

How to Apply?

There are two ways to apply for this visa:

  1. From your home country: Visit a Slovenian embassy or consulate
  2. From inside Slovenia: Go to a local administrative office

If you’re already in Slovenia, you will get a temporary residence certificate while your application is being processed.

Can Your Family Come With You?

Yes, your spouse and children can also come to Slovenia with you. They can apply for a residence permit that matches your visa duration.

But keep in mind: Family members are not allowed to work in Slovenia, unless they also meet the same digital nomad rules and apply for their own permit.

Rules You Must Follow

The digital nomad visa comes with some clear restrictions. If you break the rules, you could lose your visa or even get banned from Slovenia.

You are not allowed to:

  • Work for any Slovenian company or client
  • Start or run a business inside Slovenia
  • Earn money from any Slovenian source

This visa is only for people who earn their income from outside Slovenia.

Why Pick Slovenia as Your Remote Work Destination?

Slovenia is a small but stunning country located in Central Europe. It offers:

  • Beautiful mountains, lakes, and forests
  • A safe and peaceful lifestyle
  • A lower cost of living compared to many other European countries
  • Easy access to nearby countries like Italy, Austria, and Croatia

Slovenia is now becoming a top choice for digital nomads who want a balanced life — where they can work online and enjoy nature, culture, and safety all at once.
