Sindh Removes Charges for Death Certificates Under New Policy

The Sindh Cabinet has officially approved the removal of fees for obtaining death certificates, making the process completely free for all citizens. People will now be able to receive their death certificates without paying any charges at municipal offices, union councils, and town committees across the province.

According to an official spokesperson, this decision is part of the Sindh government’s ongoing effort to make essential public services more accessible and citizen-friendly. Earlier, in September 2024, the provincial cabinet had already introduced free birth registration throughout Sindh. The latest decision builds on that initiative, aiming to simplify civil documentation for every resident, regardless of their financial background.

This step is also part of the Sindh government’s partnership with the United Nations and other international organizations to strengthen the province’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system. The CRVS system helps maintain accurate records of births, deaths, and other vital events, ensuring that citizens’ rights are protected and that development policies are based on reliable data.

Under this new policy, the Sindh government will now bear all service-related costs that were previously payable to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). This means that applicants will not have to pay any charges when applying for death certificates, removing a financial burden that often affected low-income families.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that this initiative aims to make life easier for the public and promote the digital registration of vital life events as outlined in the Sindh Local Government Act 2013. He emphasized that ensuring free access to both birth and death registrations is a key step toward modernizing the province’s administrative system and improving transparency.

The proposal had been thoroughly reviewed and endorsed by the Law and Finance Departments before being submitted to the cabinet. Following its validation by the Chief Secretary, the Sindh Cabinet gave its formal approval, marking another significant reform in the province’s journey toward a more efficient and people-centered governance system.
