The Sindh government has announced two major programs to help the people of the province, especially women. One is a large housing project that will offer 2.1 million free homes to the victims of the devastating 2022 floods. The other is a yearly program to give pink electric scooters (EVs) to women to promote eco-friendly travel and women’s empowerment, according to a report by ARY News.
Sindh’s Minister for Information and Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, held a press conference where he shared details about these two upcoming initiatives. He explained that the government is committed to supporting women and providing green transportation options. These programs show the Sindh government’s serious effort to improve people’s lives, especially those who were badly affected by natural disasters.
Back in 2022, terrible floods destroyed nearly 2.1 million homes across Sindh. Many families lost everything. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari promised to help these families by rebuilding their homes. Now, that promise is turning into reality. The government has launched the biggest housing project in Sindh’s history. The unique part of this project is that the ownership of the new houses will be given in the names of women in the family. This step is meant to strengthen women’s rights and give them a sense of security and ownership.
To further support women’s independence, the Sindh government is also starting a program to distribute pink electric scooters every year. These EV scooters will help women travel safely and affordably, whether they’re going to work, school, or running errands. Sharjeel Memon said the goal is to make women more mobile and confident.
So far, around 8,000 women have already applied for the pink scooter scheme. The government is in the process of buying the electric bikes and has announced that only women with valid driving licenses will be able to receive them.
To make sure that women can use and maintain their scooters properly, the government is also setting up free training centers. These centers will be located in major cities including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Nawabshah, Benazirabad, and Mirpurkhas. Here, women—including mothers, sisters, and daughters—can learn how to ride and take care of their scooters at no cost.
In the first phase of the program, which is set to begin next month, the Sindh government will distribute 1,000 electric scooters. These will be handed out through a lucky draw or lottery system to ensure fairness.
Besides the scooter program, the Sindh government is also working on launching an electric taxi project, which is planned to start in June 2025. This will not only provide more green transportation options but also create job opportunities for people in the province.
These new programs reflect the Sindh government’s mission to build a better future, especially for women, by combining support, empowerment, and sustainability.
