Pakistan’s star fast bowler, Shaheen Shah Afridi, is all set to return to the national T20I squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of the West Indies. This news brings a big boost to the team, especially as Pakistan faces a packed international cricket schedule in the coming months.
As reported by Au Rangzeb Younis, Shaheen is expected to be one of three major changes in the squad that recently played against Bangladesh. His comeback is seen as a strong move by the team management as they gear up for tougher challenges ahead.
The 25-year-old left-arm pacer hasn’t played international T20 cricket since March 2025. In his absence, the selectors tried out several young fast bowlers to build bench strength. At the same time, white-ball head coach Mike Hesson had said that Shaheen needed to focus on certain areas of his bowling if he wanted to make a strong return to the squad.
Now, with the Asia Cup 2025 approaching fast, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) seems ready to bring him back. Reports suggest that Shaheen, who previously captained Pakistan, will once again lead the bowling attack with the new ball.
Shaheen had to sit out two back-to-back T20I series against Bangladesh—one played in Pakistan and the other overseas. These matches gave opportunities to emerging bowlers, but none could quite match the experience and threat that Shaheen brings to the table.
With the upcoming West Indies tour, which will include both ODIs and T20Is, the team wants their top bowler back in action. The management believes this is the right time to reintegrate him into the team and fine-tune the squad before the major events like the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup.
The tour of the West Indies is expected to feature a more experienced and competitive squad. According to reports, Ahmed Daniyal and Abbas Afridi may be dropped from the team to make room for more seasoned bowlers like Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali. This shift indicates that the selectors are now focusing on finalizing a strong core team for upcoming global tournaments.
The West Indies tour is scheduled for early August 2025 and is seen as a key preparation phase for Pakistan. With both ODI and T20 matches on the agenda, the tour will give the team a chance to test combinations, improve their game plan, and finalize their best playing XI for the Asia Cup and World Cup.
Shaheen Afridi has been one of the most dangerous fast bowlers in world cricket. With 102 wickets in 79 T20 internationals, he’s known for troubling batters with his pace, swing, and deadly yorkers. His return will likely give a huge boost to Pakistan’s bowling attack, especially during the powerplay overs.
The Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to announce the full squad for the West Indies tour very soon. All signs point to Shaheen Shah Afridi’s inclusion being locked in. Fans will be excited to see him back in action, wearing the green jersey, and leading the attack with his fiery spells.
