The School Education Department (SED) of Punjab has released an urgent advisory for all public and private schools as temperatures continue to rise across the province. With a strong heatwave affecting many areas, the department is asking schools to take special steps to protect students, teachers, and other staff members from the harmful effects of extreme heat.
According to the new instructions, all schools must immediately make arrangements to keep students safe. One of the key rules is to provide clean, cool drinking water in every classroom. Schools must make sure that students drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day to avoid dehydration and stay healthy. Teachers are also advised to remind children to drink water regularly.
To help students stay cool, classes should be held in rooms that have good ventilation. Schools must use fans or air coolers to keep the air moving and make the learning environment more comfortable. The advisory clearly states that all outdoor activities, such as sports, morning assemblies, and playtime, should be stopped during the hottest hours of the day. Instead, students should stay indoors when the sun is strongest, usually between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
The education department is also asking schools to educate both students and staff about the signs and dangers of heatstroke. Schools are encouraged to hold awareness sessions where children learn what symptoms to look out for, such as dizziness, headache, heavy sweating, and weakness. Early knowledge can help save lives in case someone falls ill due to the heat.
In addition, every school must have a fully stocked first-aid kit available at all times. Teachers and staff should also be trained to respond quickly in case of heat-related emergencies. This includes knowing how to cool someone down and when to seek medical help.
These safety guidelines are meant to make sure that all students and staff remain safe and healthy during the ongoing heatwave. The School Education Department has made it clear that both government and private schools across Punjab must follow these instructions strictly. School heads are expected to take full responsibility for implementing these steps without delay.
With summer temperatures continuing to rise, these timely actions can help prevent serious health problems and ensure that children can continue their education in a safe environment.
