The Punjab government has officially announced the launch of its first-ever E-Taxi Scheme, a major step toward modern and eco-friendly public transport under the Transport Vision 2030. This initiative is designed to provide citizens with clean, affordable, and efficient travel options while also addressing environmental concerns like rising air pollution.
First Phase of the Scheme
In the initial phase, the government will introduce 1,100 electric taxis. These taxis will be given to applicants who meet the eligibility criteria. People interested in participating can easily apply by filling out the online form available at e-taxi.punjab.gov.pk. The last date to submit applications is October 5, 2025, giving citizens a clear deadline to register.
Purpose and Benefits
According to officials, the new E-Taxi service will play a vital role in:
- Reducing air pollution caused by traditional petrol and diesel vehicles.
- Lowering fuel costs for drivers and passengers since electric vehicles (EVs) are far more cost-effective in the long run.
- Providing modern transport facilities to the people of Punjab, making urban mobility smoother and more reliable.
- Creating job opportunities by adding more drivers and staff to the transportation system.
This initiative reflects the government’s broader plan to modernize transport in the province while keeping environmental sustainability in mind.
Financing Arrangements for EVs
To make this project practical and affordable, the Punjab government has also finalized special financing arrangements for electric vehicles. Last month, the Chief Minister approved a plan that allows banks to provide loans of up to Rs. 6.5 million for the purchase of EVs.
Subsidies and Support for Buyers
Under this scheme, buyers will not have to worry about high interest rates. The government will cover the entire interest cost, making the loan interest-free for participants. Additionally, for vehicles priced between Rs. 4 million and Rs. 10 million, the Punjab government will contribute Rs. 585,000 toward the buyer’s down payment. The rest of the payment will be managed through the partnering banks, ensuring that EVs become more affordable for ordinary citizens.
A Step Toward a Greener Future
The E-Taxi Scheme is not just about convenience; it is also about building a greener and cleaner future for Punjab. By encouraging the use of electric vehicles, the government hopes to significantly reduce the dependence on fossil fuels, cut harmful emissions, and set an example for other provinces in Pakistan.
This ambitious project shows the Punjab government’s commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental protection, making transport safer, cheaper, and sustainable for everyone.
