The Punjab Govt free Wi-Fi service has been extended to more areas in Punjab, including Lahore. The number of Wi-Fi hotspots in Lahore has increased from 200 to 230, and the service now runs on the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology. A spokesperson stated that Wi-Fi 6 will offer faster and more stable internet. The Safe Cities Authority currently provides free Wi-Fi at 300 locations across 11 districts in Punjab.
The service is active in Lahore, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum, and Attock. Residents of Sahiwal, Okara, and Murree can also access it at key locations. The Safe Cities spokesperson confirmed plans to expand it across the province soon.
So far, over 17.7 million users have used the service, consuming 438 terabytes of data. Residents appreciate the initiative, saying it helps with daily tasks.
However, the spokesperson clarified that free Wi-Fi is mainly for emergencies and cannot be used for video streaming or entertainment. The Punjab government is working to make the province a digital hub.
Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a plan to upgrade government schools with smart classrooms and digital labs. This initiative aims to bring modern technology into education.
Speaking on Digital Learning Day, Maryam Nawaz stressed that technology and education must go hand in hand.
“Development now depends on technology, and Punjab’s youth must gain the skills needed for today’s world,” she said.
The government is introducing advanced IT training programs to help students meet global job market demands. Punjab now offers international-standard courses in artificial intelligence (AI), software development, and freelancing to equip students with modern skills.
