Punjab Govt Confirms No Hike in Motorcycle Registration Fees

The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has cleared the air about recent rumors spreading on social media. These rumors claimed that the government was planning to increase registration fees for motorcycles and electric bikes. However, officials have strongly denied these claims.

Amber Jabeen, the spokesperson for the Finance, Excise, and Taxation Minister, spoke to Geo Fact Check and clearly stated that there is no proposal or plan to raise the registration charges for any kind of motorcycles or e-bikes. She assured the public that the department has not made any changes to the fee structure.

In addition, she shared a message from Umar Sher, the Director General of Excise and Taxation. He described the social media posts about fee hikes as nothing more than “speculations.” He emphasized that people should not believe such unverified information.

To provide more clarity, Asim Amin, the Director of Enforcement and Audit, confirmed that the official registration fees remain the same and have not been changed. Here is the current fee structure:

  • Motorcycles up to 70cc: Rs. 1,000
  • 71cc to 100cc: Rs. 1,500
  • 101cc to 125cc: Rs. 2,000
  • 126cc to 150cc: Rs. 2,500
  • Above 150cc: 2% of the bike’s market value

He also added that electric bikes still receive a 95% discount on both registration charges and token tax. This discount is part of the government’s efforts to encourage the use of environmentally friendly vehicles.

Moreover, a spokesperson from the Punjab Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (VICS) also addressed another circulating rumor. Some posts claimed that a new Rs. 1,000 fitness certificate fee for motorcycles had been introduced. However, the VICS representative confirmed that no such notification has been issued.

He further explained that VICS has not been given any instructions to carry out inspections on motorcycles. Also, the recently approved Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 does not include motorcycles in the list of vehicles that need to have a mandatory fitness certificate.

In short, all the talk about increased motorcycle or electric bike registration fees and fitness certificate charges is false. There are no new fees, and the government has made no changes to the current registration or inspection rules. Officials urge the public to ignore baseless rumors and rely only on verified information from official sources.
