In an effort to provide relief to students and teachers from the intense summer heat, the Punjab government has officially reduced public school hours by 30 minutes during the summer season. The revised schedule will be in effect from April 7 to October 15, ensuring that school activities are aligned with the rising temperatures.
As per the notification issued by the School Education Department (SED), all public schools operating under a single-shift system will now start their day at 7:30 AM and conclude at 1:00 PM from Monday to Thursday. On Fridays, school hours will be further shortened, with classes ending at 11:30 AM. Previously, schools remained open until 1:30 PM during the summer months, making this change a direct response to concerns over the well-being of students and staff.
Updated Schedule Timings for Double-Shift Schools
For institutions that follow a double-shift schedule, the timing adjustments are as follows:
- Morning Shift: From Monday to Thursday, classes will be held from 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM, while on Fridays, they will conclude earlier at 11:30 AM.
- Evening Shift: From Monday to Thursday, the second shift will operate from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, while on Fridays, it will commence at 2:30 PM and end at 4:00 PM.
This revision ensures that students attending the afternoon shift are not exposed to extreme heat conditions for extended periods.
The District Education Authority (DEA) Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the new school timings. Any institution failing to adhere to the updated schedule may face legal consequences, as authorities are committed to enforcing this measure for the welfare of students and teachers.
Recognizing that different areas may have unique logistical challenges, the government has also permitted a 15-minute variation in the opening and closing times for boys’ and girls’ schools. This flexibility is granted based on specific local conditions and is aimed at accommodating transportation concerns, security measures, and other relevant factors.
With the implementation of these revised timings, the Punjab government aims to create a more comfortable and efficient learning environment during the hot summer months, prioritizing the health and productivity of students and teachers alike.
