The Punjab Board Committee of Chairmen (PBCC) has officially introduced a 10-point grading system for matriculation and intermediate examinations, marking a significant shift from the traditional numerical marking scheme. According to a report by 24NewsHD TV on Wednesday, this new system aims to modernize the assessment criteria and provide a more comprehensive evaluation of students’ academic performance.
Under the revised grading system, students will no longer be awarded numerical marks. Instead, their performance will be assessed based on grades and Grade Point Average (GPA). This approach is expected to reduce the stress associated with the conventional marks-based system and encourage a deeper understanding of subjects rather than rote memorization.
One of the key changes in this system is the replacement of the term “Fail” with “Unsatisfactory.” This change is intended to create a more positive learning environment and reduce the stigma attached to failing grades. Additionally, the minimum passing percentage will be increased from 33% to 40%, ensuring that students achieve a higher level of competency before moving to the next academic level.
The implementation of this grading system will take place in two phases:
- Phase 1 (2026): Students of 9th and 11th grade will be evaluated using grades instead of numerical marks.
- Phase 2 (2027): The grading system will be extended to 10th and 12th grade, making it a uniform evaluation method across all secondary and higher secondary levels.
Board officials have emphasized that this transformation is aimed at shifting students’ focus from competing for high marks to improving their overall academic skills and knowledge retention. By reducing the pressure of securing specific marks, educators hope students will develop a more conceptual understanding of subjects and enhance their problem-solving abilities.
