PTA Major Operation Against IMEI Tampering and Phone Cloning

PTA Major Operation Against IMEI Tampering and Phone Cloning

In a big step to stop illegal mobile-related activities, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), together with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), has started a special crackdown in Abbottabad and Haripur. According to ARY News, the main focus of this operation is to target IMEI tampering and mobile phone cloning, which have become major concerns for both national security and the safety of citizens.

The joint enforcement teams carried out surprise raids at different mobile repair shops in Haripur. Some of the targeted areas included shops near Fowara Masjid in Mochi Bazaar and several outlets located along the busy Main GT Road. These raids were planned carefully to ensure that illegal businesses involved in phone cloning and IMEI tampering were caught red-handed.

During these operations, the authorities seized a large collection of equipment used for such unlawful activities. Among the confiscated items were cloned mobile phones, desktop computers, laptops, USB devices, and even a DVR system. This discovery showed that the criminals were using advanced tools to carry out cybercrimes.

Three people found directly involved in IMEI tampering were arrested on the spot. They were immediately handed over to the NCCIA for further questioning and investigation. The authorities confirmed that more arrests could follow, as the investigation might reveal wider networks linked to these crimes.

The PTA explained that IMEI tampering and mobile cloning are not just minor violations but serious threats to national security. Such practices open doors to cybercrime, financial fraud, and other illegal activities that can harm ordinary people and the country’s digital systems. PTA also highlighted that these actions are not only unlawful but also highly unethical.

The telecom authority once again repeated its strict zero-tolerance policy against mobile-related crimes. It strongly urged the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities related to mobile phone repair shops or individuals offering cloning services. PTA assured that legal action will be taken under the full extent of the law to punish violators.

This recent crackdown also proves that Pakistan’s regulatory bodies and cybercrime investigators are working hand in hand to protect the country’s digital environment. By taking such strong actions, they aim to ensure that telecom services remain safe, secure, and legal for every citizen.

Earlier, Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi had already taken serious notice of another related issue — the leakage of mobile SIM data. This matter raised public concern as it could be misused for fraud, identity theft, or other illegal purposes.

Following the Interior Minister’s directions, the NCCIA launched a special operation to address this problem. A dedicated investigation team was formed under Mohsin Naqvi’s instructions, and this team has been tasked with probing the data leakage from every possible angle.

The investigation team will work to identify all individuals or groups involved in this crime. Once the culprits are found, strict legal action will be taken against them. The authorities also assured the public that no one involved in the crime will be spared.

As part of accountability, the investigation team has been ordered to present its detailed report on the matter directly to the Interior Minister within 14 days. This step shows the government’s determination to deal with cybercrimes and ensure that citizens’ data remains protected.
