PMD Issues Monsoon Warning: Flood Risk in August Remains High

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced that the ongoing monsoon rains are expected to continue for the next two days across many parts of the country. With more rainfall on the way, authorities have issued warnings about the chances of both urban and river flooding in several areas.

According to Irfan Virk, the Deputy Director of the Meteorological Department, July has already recorded 25% more rainfall than the usual monthly average across Pakistan. However, he noted that the Sindh region has received less rain than expected so far. He also warned that August could bring even more rain, possibly above the normal average, which may lead to serious flooding in major cities and along important riverbanks.

Flood Warnings in Punjab: Rivers Under Watch

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued flood warnings for several rivers in the Punjab province. Among the rivers being closely monitored are the Chenab and the Jhelum, where moderate flooding is expected between July 30 and July 31.

A spokesperson from the PDMA stated that water levels are expected to rise in rivers linked to the Ravi, and a major surge in water flow is predicted in the Sutlej River, especially at the Ganda Singh point, within the next 24 hours. This has raised concerns for nearby communities and agricultural lands.

The PDMA has advised people living near riverbanks and in low-lying areas to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow the instructions issued by local authorities. Rescue teams are also being kept on standby in case of any emergency situations.

Urban Flooding Risk in Major Cities

In addition to river flooding, there is a serious risk of urban flooding in several major cities due to continuous and heavy rainfall. The PDMA has specifically issued alerts for Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Lahore, where drainage systems might be overwhelmed, leading to water accumulation in streets and neighborhoods.

Commissioners in eight major divisions of Punjab — including Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal — have been put on high alert. They have been directed to monitor the situation closely and respond quickly in case of emergencies.

Authorities on High Alert

The Punjab Relief Commissioner has instructed all departments, including local administrations, rescue services, and health teams, to stay fully prepared. Measures are being taken to ensure that machinery like water pumps, rescue boats, and emergency supplies are ready for use in case of flash floods or waterlogging in cities.

The government has also urged the public to stay updated by following weather reports and official announcements. People are advised not to go near rivers or canals and to avoid traveling through flooded roads.

As the monsoon season continues, both residents and authorities are bracing for the impact of possible heavy rains in August. Preparedness and timely response will be key to minimizing damage and ensuring public safety in the coming days.
