The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing to introduce big changes to its central contracts for players, with major adjustments expected in Category D. According to inside sources, these new changes are now in the final stages of discussion, and a reshuffle of players is highly likely. Many cricketers could lose their contracts, while several new faces may finally get a chance to enter the system. Some players might even be awarded a central contract for the very first time, which shows that the PCB is trying to build a balance between experienced names and young talent.
In order to finalize these contracts, consultations have been held with all major stakeholders. This includes team coaches, the director of high performance, the finance department, and even the International Cricket Department. By involving different wings of the board, the PCB is ensuring that the contracts reflect not only performance but also financial sustainability and long-term planning.
However, sources confirmed that players who are no longer part of any of the three formats of cricket—Test, ODI, or T20I—are almost certain to be dropped. Among the cricketers who may not make the cut are Aamir Jamal, Mohammad Huraira, Haseebullah, Usman Khan, and Mohammad Ali. This move indicates that the PCB now wants to invest only in those players who are relevant to the team’s current and future needs.
On the other hand, several names are expected to benefit from this reshuffling. Hasan Nawaz, Mohammad Haris, Sufyan Muqeem, Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, and Fakhar Zaman are likely to secure central contracts. Their recent performances and potential to contribute in future tournaments have made them strong contenders. Moreover, the names of Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Nawaz, and Sahibzada Farhan are also under review, meaning they still have a chance to be included.
It is worth noting that the current three-year financial model for central contracts is now in its final year. The PCB is expected to officially announce the new contracts once chairman Mohsin Naqvi gives his approval. This announcement is likely to be closely followed by players, fans, and cricket experts, as it will set the tone for Pakistan cricket in the coming years.
Meanwhile, attention is also on Pakistan’s upcoming international assignments. The national squad for the T20I tri-series in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025 is likely to include 18 players, which is three more than the usual squad size. This increase shows that the management wants more flexibility and backup options, especially with frequent injuries and workload management in modern cricket.
According to details, the men’s selection committee has already started preliminary discussions for the squad. They will also consult with T20I captain Salman Ali Agha and head coach Mike Hesson, who has just returned from the West Indies after the white-ball series. Once these discussions are complete, the final list of players will be prepared and sent to PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi for approval. The official announcement of the squad is expected within the next two to three days.
Sources further revealed that emerging pacers Salman Mirza and Ahmed Daniyal are strong candidates to be called up for the squad. Their inclusion would not only give them exposure at the international level but also strengthen Pakistan’s pace attack, which has always been the team’s biggest strength.
The tri-nation series will be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium from August 29 to September 7. It will feature Pakistan, Afghanistan, and hosts UAE. Pakistan will begin their campaign on August 29 against Afghanistan at 7:00 PM local time, a match that is expected to attract a large number of viewers both in the stadium and on TV screens.
As for the Asia Cup 2025, the tournament will kick off on August 9 with the opening game between Afghanistan and Hong Kong. The event will run for almost seven weeks, ending on September 28. Pakistan’s journey in the Asia Cup will begin on September 12 against Oman, followed by their most awaited clash against arch-rivals India on September 14. This match is likely to be the biggest highlight of the tournament, drawing massive attention from cricket fans all over the world.
With all these developments, it is clear that the PCB is not only reshaping its central contracts system but also preparing carefully for the important series and tournaments ahead. The coming weeks will therefore be very crucial for Pakistan cricket, both on and off the field.
