Pakistan to Play Tri-Nation Series with Afghanistan and UAE Before Asia Cup

The Chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), Mirwais Ashraf, has confirmed that discussions are currently taking place to transform the upcoming T20I series between Pakistan and Afghanistan into a three-nation tournament. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is being considered as the third team, and the likely host of the event.

In an interview with ACB Media, Mirwais Ashraf explained that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently suggested including UAE in the series. Originally, the plan was for Pakistan and Afghanistan to play a three-match bilateral series in August. However, the PCB proposed expanding it to a tri-nation competition to make it more competitive and meaningful.

“A T20I series against Pakistan was already scheduled for August,” Ashraf said. “But they recommended adding the UAE team to make it a tri-nation series.”

Ashraf welcomed the suggestion and said that the ACB has no objections to the UAE hosting the matches. He also mentioned that the main goal is to give the Afghan cricket team quality match practice before the Asia Cup, which is expected to take place later this year.

“This tri-series will help our players prepare well for the Asia Cup,” Ashraf added.

The Pakistan Cricket Board believes that including a third team like UAE will not only provide more matches but will also help all participating teams get ready for upcoming big events—especially the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The UAE cricket team has recently shown great improvement. They defeated Bangladesh 2-1 in a home T20I series, proving they are becoming a strong side in international cricket. Their participation in the tri-series will add more excitement and variety to the tournament. Playing in UAE’s neutral conditions, which are similar to those expected in the Asia Cup, will also benefit both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

If the plan is finalized, the tri-nation T20I series will be held in August in the UAE. The exact schedule, including match dates and venues, is expected to be announced soon.

This tri-series will be an exciting opportunity for all three teams to test their combinations, build team chemistry, and prepare for the challenges of upcoming international tournaments.
