Pakistan Spinner Asif Afridi Makes History with Five-for on Debut

Asif, at 38 years and 301 days, has now gone one better and etched his name in the record books forever.

Born in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Asif’s journey to international cricket has been anything but easy. He joins an exclusive group of only four cricketers who were over the age of 35 when they took a five-for on debut. The other members of this elite club are Hines Johnson from the West Indies (1948), D.W. Carr from England (1909), and Nauman Ali from Pakistan (who achieved the feat at 34).

In his debut spell, Asif Afridi dismissed some of South Africa’s most dangerous batters — Tristan Stubbs, Tony de Zorzi, Dewald Brevis, Kyle Verreynne, and Simon Harmer. This lineup was full of power-hitters and rising stars, but Asif’s experience, accuracy, and clever variations proved too much for them. Each wicket he took shifted the momentum in Pakistan’s favor, putting the team in a strong position and filling the stadium with loud cheers of celebration.
