Former Pakistan captain and legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram has shared his advice for star batter Babar Azam, who is currently out of the national T20I squad after struggling with his form in recent months.
Speaking on Geo News’ entertainment program Hasna Mana Hai, Akram gave his honest thoughts about Babar’s current challenges and offered words of encouragement for the young cricketer.
Wasim Akram’s Advice for Babar Azam
Akram reflected on the intense pressure that international players face, especially when expectations are high from fans and media. He reminded everyone that even the best cricketers go through difficult phases in their careers.
“Babar Azam is our superstar and one of the finest players in world cricket. My advice to him is simple—stay calm, avoid unnecessary press conferences, and remember this: Form is temporary, but class is forever. If he keeps working hard, there is no doubt he will once again rise to the top of world cricket,” Akram said.
Babar as a Batsman vs. Match-Winner
The 59-year-old cricket legend was also asked whether Babar should be considered more of a stylish batsman or a true match-winner. While praising his batting skills, Akram highlighted that the real test of greatness comes when a player wins games for the team in crucial situations.
“He is already a great batsman, no question about it. But I believe his best is still ahead of him. He has the ability to take Pakistan to victory many more times in the future,” Akram stated confidently.
Comparison with Javed Miandad
When asked if Babar Azam could reach the legendary status of Javed Miandad, one of Pakistan’s greatest match-winners, Akram shared his perspective.
“Right now, Babar has everything required to be a match-winner—his skill, his consistency, and his hunger for runs. But to be remembered among the true greats like Javed Miandad, he needs to win at least two or three big matches single-handedly with his batting. That’s what will cement his legacy,” Akram explained.
Babar Azam’s Current Position
Despite the recent criticism, Babar Azam remains one of the most successful batsmen in T20I history. He is currently ranked second on the list of all-time leading T20I run-scorers. However, he has not played in the shortest format since Pakistan’s three-match series against South Africa in December last year.
Babar has also been left out of the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, as selectors are focusing on giving more opportunities to younger players ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka.
Pakistan’s Current Tri-Nation Series
Meanwhile, Pakistan is participating in a tri-nation T20I series against Afghanistan and the UAE. So far, the Men in Green have won both of their matches, showing strong form ahead of the Asia Cup. The tri-series is scheduled to run from August 29 to September 7, just before the Asia Cup kicks off.
Asia Cup 2025 – Format and Schedule
The upcoming Asia Cup 2025 will feature eight teams, divided into two groups:
- Group A: Pakistan, India, UAE, and Oman
- Group B: Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong
The tournament will begin on September 9, with Afghanistan facing Hong Kong in the opening match.
Pakistan will begin their Asia Cup journey against Oman on September 12, followed by the much-anticipated clash against India on September 14, and their final group-stage match against hosts UAE on September 17.
If Pakistan qualifies for the next round, fans could witness another thrilling Pakistan vs India showdown on September 21 during the Super Four stage.
