As the first major heatwave of the season hits Pakistan, many parents and students are urging the government to start summer vacations earlier than planned. Their main concern is the health and safety of children, especially because temperatures are rising quickly and becoming dangerous.
This request comes after a serious heatwave warning was issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The department has predicted very high temperatures in different parts of the country, including the south, center, and north.
According to the PMD, a strong high-pressure system is causing the heat to rise far above the normal levels. In Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, the temperature is expected to be 4 to 6 degrees Celsius hotter than usual between May 15 and May 20.
The central and northern regions of Pakistan will also be affected. Places like Islamabad, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan might experience temperature increases of 5 to 7 degrees Celsius from May 15 to May 19. This could make it very difficult for students to stay in school safely during such extreme weather.
Because of these dangerous conditions, many parents are using social media to speak up. Some are also contacting school officials directly to request an earlier start to the summer holidays. They believe that children should not be forced to attend classes in such extreme heat.
At the moment, the Punjab government plans to start summer vacations from June 1 to August 9, 2025. This schedule will apply to both public and private schools and colleges across the province.
However, Khalid Nazir Wattoo, who is the Secretary of School Education in Punjab, has said that this plan might change if the heat becomes worse. “If the temperatures rise too much, we may begin vacations a week earlier,” he said. He also made it clear that protecting the health of students and school staff is the most important thing.
There is some hope for relief in the coming days. The PMD has said that cooler weather might reach the upper regions of the country by May 19 or May 20. A western weather system could bring rain, thunderstorms, and even hail. Areas that may benefit include Kashmir, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, northeast Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
In the meantime, parents, teachers, and school authorities continue to wait and hope for an official announcement that considers the well-being of students during this challenging heatwave.
