If you have a passport from any European Union country, including children and infants, you must now get an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the United Kingdom. This requirement applies to all EU travelers, as reported by Schengen.News.
ETA Requirement Now Mandatory for EU Nationals
Since March 5, 2025, EU nationals have been able to apply for an ETA. However, the transition period has ended, and it is now a mandatory requirement. If you arrive at the UK border without an ETA, you will not be allowed to enter the country.
What Is an ETA?
The ETA replaces the previous Electronic Visa Waiver system. It applies to travelers from visa-exempt countries who wish to visit the UK for short stays.
The UK Home Office has clarified that the ETA is not a visa. Instead, it is a digital travel authorization that permits entry but does not guarantee it. Border officials will still have the final say on whether you can enter the country.
The purpose of introducing the ETA is to strengthen border security and prevent people from abusing the immigration system. Once issued, the ETA allows travelers to visit the UK multiple times over a period of two years or until their passport expires—whichever happens first. Each visit can last up to six months.
How to Apply for an ETA
Applying for an ETA is simple and does not take much time. The easiest way to apply is through the UK ETA mobile app. Alternatively, you can apply on the official UK government website.
Required Information for the ETA Application:
- Personal details (name, date of birth, nationality, etc.)
- Passport information
- A recent photo
- Answers to security-related questions
- Payment of the required fee
Most applicants receive an approval email within minutes. However, the UK government advises travelers to apply at least three working days before departure in case additional checks are required.
Can You Apply as a Group?
Each traveler, including children, must apply for an ETA separately. Even if you are traveling as a group, you cannot submit a single group application. Because applications are processed individually, approval times may vary.
If you need to travel urgently but have not yet received an ETA decision, you can still travel to the UK while waiting for approval. However, you must ensure that your ETA is approved before reaching the UK border.
What If Your ETA Is Denied?
If your ETA application is rejected, you will be informed of the reason. You may apply again if you believe the decision was incorrect.
However, there is no appeal process for denied ETAs. If you are not granted an ETA but still wish to visit the UK, you must apply for a visa instead.
How Long Is an ETA Valid?
Once approved, an ETA is valid for two years, unless your passport expires before that time. If your passport expires, you will need to reapply for a new ETA with your updated passport information.
ETA Fee and Upcoming Increase
Currently, the ETA fee is £10 (€12). However, starting from April 9, 2025, the fee will increase to £16 (€19). This fee adjustment is aimed at reducing the financial burden on UK taxpayers for border control and migration management.
Who Is Exempt from the ETA Requirement?
Some travelers do not need to apply for an ETA. The following individuals are exempt:
- Those who already have a valid visa or permission to live, work, or study in the UK.
- British and Irish citizens.
- Travelers transiting through a UK airport without passing through border control.
- Irish residents traveling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man.
- French schoolchildren on an official school trip from France to the UK.
- Holders of British Overseas Territories or British National (Overseas) passports.
- People who are exempt from immigration control for other reasons.
Thousands Have Already Applied
Since the ETA system was introduced, thousands of travelers, including many from the EU, have successfully applied. However, official statistics for April 2025 have yet to be released.
If you plan to visit the UK, ensure you apply for your ETA well in advance to avoid any last-minute travel issues.
