NDMA Issues Flood Alert After Heavy Rain Forecast Across Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a serious warning about the possibility of flooding in several parts of the country, following weather forecasts that predict heavy rainfall between September 1 and September 3. Authorities fear that the combination of intense rain and water releases from upstream dams could cause rivers to overflow and create dangerous situations in low-lying areas.

According to the NDMA, rivers in the eastern region are particularly at risk. The Sutlej River is already flowing at an unusually high level of 253,068 cusecs, and experts predict that the flow could increase further to 300,000 cusecs in the coming days. This significant rise poses a threat to nearby villages, agricultural fields, and riverbank communities.

The situation of the Ravi River is currently stable but also concerning. At Jasarr, the river is flowing at 60,094 cusecs, which is considered normal. However, with more rainfall expected and additional water likely to be discharged from the Thane Dam, the water level could climb as high as 150,000 cusecs. If this happens, it could trigger flooding in adjoining tributaries such as Nalah Ben, Basantar, and Dek, which are already vulnerable.

The Chenab River, at present, shows a relatively low flow of 94,728 cusecs at Marala. Despite this, the NDMA has warned that heavy rains and water releases from several dams in Jammu and Kashmir—specifically Salal, Baglihar, and Dal Hasti—could lead to a sudden surge. If water levels rise sharply, the Chenab and its tributaries, including Jammu Tawi, Manwar Tawi, and Palkhu, could flood rapidly, causing serious damage to nearby settlements and farmland.

Officials have expressed concern that if river levels continue to rise, low-lying regions, embankments, and crop fields may suffer the worst damage. Floodwaters could breach protective structures, wash away crops, and leave thousands of people displaced. Farmers are particularly vulnerable as they face not only the destruction of their standing crops but also the risk of losing livestock.

In response to the threat, the NDMA has assured that it is monitoring the situation very closely. Acting on the instructions of the Prime Minister, the authority is supervising rescue and relief operations to ensure swift action if emergencies occur. The National Emergency Operations Center is working 24/7, coordinating with both civil institutions and the military to prepare for possible evacuations and disaster management.

The NDMA has also issued clear guidelines for the public. People living near riverbanks and in flood-prone areas have been strongly advised to relocate immediately to safer locations. Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate with rescue teams, avoid unnecessary travel to risky regions, and keep emergency kits ready. These kits should include food, drinking water, medicines, flashlights, important documents, and other essential supplies that families may need in case of sudden evacuation.

Furthermore, the NDMA has reminded residents that in the event of an emergency, they should stay calm, follow the instructions of the local administration, and contact the nearest relief teams without delay. Community cooperation, the authority stressed, is vital to reduce risks and save lives during natural disasters.
