As part of the Government of Pakistan’s “Udaan Pakistan” plan to improve digital services, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has started using digital tools for recording births and deaths. This project is being done in partnership with provincial governments and is now being introduced in healthcare facilities across the country.
This effort falls under the National Registration and Biometric Policy Framework, which aims to modernize how Pakistan keeps records of important life events like births and deaths. NADRA is taking real steps to improve the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system. With the help of new digital tools, hospitals and clinics can now record these events instantly, accurately, and in full detail at the time they happen.
The information gathered through this new system will help support the federal government’s “Udaan Pakistan” program. This program focuses on making government services more digital and efficient. The accurate birth and death records will also help power big national projects like creating Digital ID systems and building a strong Digital Economy. NADRA is leading a major project called the Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP), which is supported by the World Bank and involves many national partners. This project is a big step toward using technology to support growth and improve public services in Pakistan.
To make sure this new system works smoothly all across Pakistan — including in regions like Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) — NADRA is signing formal agreements with different provincial governments. These agreements will help put the digital system into action at the local level.
One of the latest agreements was signed in Karachi. Mr. Saeed Ghani, the Provincial Minister for Local Government, Housing, and Town Planning in Sindh, attended the event. On behalf of the Sindh government, both the Secretary of Health and the Secretary of Local Government signed the agreement. The Director General of NADRA Karachi signed it on behalf of NADRA.
Before this, a similar agreement was signed in Quetta between NADRA and the Government of Balochistan. It was signed by the Provincial Secretary of Health, the Secretary of Local Government, and the Director General of NADRA Balochistan.
More agreements with other provinces, including AJ&K and GB, are expected to be signed soon. These partnerships show a shared commitment to using digital tools to improve public services and help build a modern, technology-driven Pakistan.
