Muharram 2025 Moon Sighting Date and Youm-e-Ashura Schedule

Muharram 2025 Moon Sighting Date and Youm-e-Ashura Schedule

The new Islamic year, 1447 Hijri, is likely to start on Friday, June 27, 2025, according to astronomical experts. They say the moon for the month of Muharram will probably not be seen on the evening of Tuesday, June 25, which means the new year is expected to begin two days later.

Experts explain that the new moon will be born on Tuesday, June 25 at 3:31 PM (Pakistan Standard Time). Since the moon will still be too low on the horizon by sunset that day, it will be very difficult to see with the naked eye in countries like Pakistan, India, and across the Middle East. However, in some areas of the United States, the moon might be visible using telescopes or special equipment.

Astronomers suggest that Wednesday, June 26, will offer a much better chance of spotting the moon. If it is sighted that evening, then Friday, June 27, will officially be the first day of Muharram, not just in Pakistan, but in many other countries as well.

If Muharram begins on June 27, then the 10th of Muharram, known as Youm-e-Ashura, will fall on Sunday, July 6, 2025. This day is especially significant in Islamic history and is observed with great respect and devotion by Muslims around the world.

In Pakistan, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee—the official moon-sighting body—is expected to hold a meeting on June 26. They will review moon-sighting reports from across the country and announce the final decision about the start of the new Islamic year later that evening.

Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam and holds deep religious importance. It also marks the beginning of the Hijri calendar, which is used by Muslims globally for religious observances. The month of Muharram, especially Youm-e-Ashura, is a time for reflection, remembrance, and in many traditions, mourning—particularly in honor of the sacrifices made by Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at the Battle of Karbala.
