The government of the Maldives, under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has announced an extended public holiday in celebration of Eid ul-Fitr, ensuring that citizens have ample time to observe the religious occasion and spend quality time with their loved ones.
According to an official statement released by the President’s Office, the holiday schedule depends on the official sighting of the moon. If the Ministry of Islamic Affairs declares Shawwal 1 on March 31, 2025, the public holidays will extend from March 31 to April 3. However, if Eid ul-Fitr falls on March 30 instead, the government holidays would have been adjusted to March 30, 31, and April 1. Regardless of the exact date of Eid, President Muizzu has ensured that the holiday period will last until April 3, providing a consistent and uninterrupted break for the public.
To further extend the holiday period, President Muizzu highlighted that the Eid break would lead directly into the weekend, with Friday and Saturday also observed as non-working days. This means that government offices will officially reopen on Sunday, April 6, 2025. The decision reflects the administration’s commitment to fostering a balance between work and personal life while upholding the cultural and religious values of the Maldivian people.
Acording to report Samaatv, Additionally, in adherence to his long-standing policy, President Muizzu has granted an extended holiday period starting from March 20, covering the last ten days of Ramadan. This initiative aims to encourage citizens to engage in spiritual reflection, prayer, and other religious practices during this sacred period. The government has recognized the significance of the final days of Ramadan, a time when many Muslims dedicate themselves to increased worship, charity, and devotion.
Despite the extended break, the President has assured the public that essential government services will continue to operate without disruption. Key departments and emergency services will remain functional to ensure that citizens receive necessary assistance and support during the holidays.
This move aligns with President Muizzu’s broader vision of promoting Islamic traditions while also prioritizing the well-being of the Maldivian people. By allowing an extended holiday for both Ramadan and Eid, the government reinforces its commitment to religious observance, family unity, and the overall happiness of the nation.
