Karachi University Students to Benefit from Rs5.9m Scholarship Program

A private organization has taken a big step to support higher education by announcing scholarships worth Rs. 5.9 million for the students of the University of Karachi. These scholarships will benefit students from five different departments of the university. An official agreement was signed between the university and the sponsoring organization to start this initiative. The program is seen as a ray of hope for many students who are struggling with the rising cost of education.

At the signing ceremony, Vice Chancellor of Karachi University, Dr. Khalid Iraqi, spoke about the difficult situation of higher education in Pakistan. He revealed a concerning fact — only about two percent of students in the entire country are able to make it to higher education institutions. The main reason behind this low number, he said, is financial pressure on families. With increasing inflation and limited income opportunities, many parents are unable to send their children to universities, even if the students are bright and hardworking.

Dr. Iraqi explained that the lack of industrial growth and the shortage of government funds for education have worsened the problem. Unemployment is rising in the country, and many families are finding it hard to meet basic needs. In such conditions, paying for university fees becomes impossible for a large number of households. He emphasized that this situation not only affects individual students but also harms the nation’s progress, because a country cannot grow without a strong education system.

The Vice Chancellor strongly urged both the government and the private sector to step forward and play a bigger role in supporting education. According to him, universities alone cannot solve this crisis. Scholarships, financial aid, and educational funds must be increased so that no student is forced to leave their studies because of money. He also reminded everyone that investing in education is not just charity — it is an investment in the future of Pakistan.

Dr. Iraqi also highlighted the steps that Karachi University itself has taken to support deserving students. He proudly mentioned that the university has created several scholarships with the help of its alumni, who contribute funds to help students in need. He said that Karachi University is the only university in Pakistan that has established a special Student Admission Fund. This fund is designed to ensure that students who are academically capable but financially weak are not deprived of their right to study.

Last year, under this fund, Rs. 10 million were distributed to support students who qualified for admission but could not afford tuition fees. Many young people were able to continue their education because of this initiative. Dr. Iraqi assured that the university will continue to expand such efforts but added that private organizations must also come forward to strengthen the education sector. He stressed that by working together, the government, private institutions, and universities can build a better future for the youth of Pakistan.
