Hyderabad was hit by heavy and continuous rainfall during the last 24 hours, causing widespread damage and disruption across the city. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the intensity of the downpour broke recent records in many areas, creating a flood-like situation, ARY News reported.
The PMD shared detailed figures of rainfall across different parts of Hyderabad. Latifabad received the heaviest showers, with 280 millimeters of rain recorded, making it the most affected locality. City Taluka was not far behind, receiving 268 millimeters of rain. Qasimabad reported 185 millimeters, while Rural Taluka saw 158 millimeters. These high numbers reflect the severity of the situation, as the city’s drainage systems were unable to cope with such a massive volume of water.
Unfortunately, the heavy rains also led to tragic incidents. In one heartbreaking case, floodwaters swept away both a rickshaw and a car into the Thado stream. Eyewitnesses told local media that a woman lost her life after drowning, while another woman and the driver of the car remained trapped inside the submerged vehicle. Rescue operations have been ongoing, but police officials said that the rising water levels in the Konkar stream made it extremely difficult for teams to recover the trapped individuals and vehicles.
Latifabad, the area that recorded the highest rainfall, was badly hit by flooding. Streets turned into rivers, making it impossible for residents to move around freely. Many people were forced to stay indoors, while shopkeepers in low-lying markets suffered major losses as floodwater entered their businesses.
Karachi also faced the effects of heavy showers during the same period. Several major roads were completely submerged, leaving commuters stranded for hours. Among the worst affected were M.A. Jinnah Road, Guru Mandir, Golimar, Rizvia, Board Office, KDA, Nagan Chowrangi, and Karelia Stop. Traffic jams worsened the situation, and residents faced great difficulty in reaching their homes or workplaces.
In addition, several neighborhoods, including Lassi Goth and Sukhia Goth, reported emergencies as rainwater entered houses and forced families to shift their belongings to higher places. For many, daily life came to a standstill. Police authorities also confirmed that two factory walls collapsed due to the pressure of the gushing water, raising safety concerns in nearby industrial areas.
The continuous rainfall has not only damaged infrastructure but also highlighted the urgent need for better drainage and disaster management systems in both Hyderabad and Karachi. Residents are now urging local authorities to speed up relief efforts and provide immediate assistance to those affected by the floods.
