The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced Pakistan’s first-ever dematerialized ID card, marking a major advancement in the country’s digital identity landscape. This milestone was unveiled during NADRA’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, commemorating 25 years of excellence in identity management, national security, and database integration.
The introduction of digital ID aims to modernize identification processes, eliminating the need for physical ID cards and enhancing accessibility for citizens. By leveraging advanced technology, NADRA is paving the way for a more secure and efficient identity verification system in Pakistan.
Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control, Mohsin Raza Naqvi, hailed this initiative as a transformative step in Pakistan’s journey toward digital governance. He emphasized that integrating digital identity into the Pak ID Mobile Application will significantly improve convenience for citizens, reducing dependency on physical cards. With this new feature, Pakistanis can securely access their ID information on their smartphones anytime, anywhere.
Minister Naqvi further highlighted that this initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of a digital Pakistan, where technology-driven solutions enhance efficiency in public services. The shift toward digital IDs will not only streamline identity verification but also contribute to better governance, financial inclusion, and national security.
Future Plans: Digital Verification and Nationwide Rollout
As part of its digital expansion strategy, NADRA is set to introduce a robust digital verification system under the World Bank-funded Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP). This initiative is expected to revolutionize how identity authentication is conducted across various sectors, including banking, e-governance, and public service access.
A pilot project for fully digital identification will be launched on August 14, 2025, in a phased manner. Once implemented, this system will provide seamless authentication for essential services, ensuring that identity verification becomes more secure, efficient, and fraud-resistant.
In addition, NADRA remains committed to ensuring that identity services are accessible even in the most remote regions of Pakistan. Efforts are underway to extend digital identity solutions to overseas Pakistanis, allowing them to authenticate their credentials conveniently from anywhere in the world. Minister Naqvi reiterated NADRA’s crucial role in governance, law enforcement, and national security, emphasizing the agency’s dedication to innovation and service excellence.
How to Download Your Digital ID Card
With the integration of the digital ID feature into the Pak ID Mobile App, citizens can now store their Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) on their smartphones. This move enhances both security and convenience, reducing the risk of loss or damage associated with physical ID cards.
To obtain a digital ID card, follow these simple steps:
- Download the Pak ID Mobile App from the official app store (Google Play Store for Android or Apple App Store for iOS).
- Open the app and navigate to the digital ID section in the menu.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to verify your identity and download a softcopy of your CNIC.
- Store your digital ID securely within the app for easy access whenever needed.
This initiative marks a significant step toward a paperless, efficient, and secure identity management system in Pakistan. By embracing digital ID technology, NADRA is ensuring that citizens can conveniently access identity-related services without the constraints of carrying physical cards.
With the launch of this revolutionary digital ID system, Pakistan is moving closer to a future where identity verification is faster, safer, and more accessible for everyone.
