HMD Planning a Major Move Into Laptops With New Chromebook Model

HMD, the company that took over Nokia’s phone business and later started releasing its own smartphones, now seems to be preparing for another major step in its journey. After spending years building a strong presence in the mobile world, the company may finally be ready to enter the laptop market for the very first time.

A new leak shared by X user @smashx_60 reveals that HMD is reportedly working on a 2-in-1 Chromebook. The device is said to be called the HMD (Chrome)Book CS-1 Flip, also referred to as the HMD Book CS-1 Flip. The name “Flip” strongly suggests a 360-degree rotating hinge, which means users would be able to use it like a traditional laptop or flip it all the way around to use it as a tablet. This design is already popular among modern Chromebooks, as it makes the device more flexible for students, office workers, and casual users.

Over the last two years, HMD has been steadily expanding its product lineup. At first, the company mainly focused on simple feature phones — a category where it still performs very well. Later, HMD introduced smartphones, Android tablets, and a variety of accessories. Each year, the company has tried to grow into new areas. But a laptop or Chromebook would be a completely new direction and a big step forward for the Finnish brand.

It’s worth noting that laptops carrying the Nokia name have existed before, such as the Nokia PureBook series, but those were not developed by HMD. Instead, they were created by a third-party licensing partner, and that partnership has since ended. This time, the Chromebook is expected to come directly from HMD, making it the company’s first true laptop product.

Although there isn’t much technical information available yet, the leak does mention one important detail: the CS-1 Flip is expected to be powered by an Intel processor. This is interesting because many entry-level Chromebooks depend on ARM-based processors, especially from MediaTek, which are more budget-friendly but less powerful. Using an Intel chip might give the CS-1 Flip better performance, smoother multitasking, and stronger support for web apps and school work.

However, many major details are still unknown. For example:

  • The screen size is not confirmed.
  • The exact Intel chip being used has not been revealed.
  • There is no information about RAM or storage options.
  • It is unclear whether HMD will target students, professionals, or general users.
  • Pricing details are also missing, which will be crucial in determining the device’s success.

If this Chromebook does launch, it will enter a market that is already very crowded and highly competitive. Brands like Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and Samsung have been making Chromebooks for many years and dominate the global market. To make an impact, HMD will need to offer something unique — whether that means better performance, a competitive price, or a design that stands out.

Still, the appearance of a leak with a full product name is usually a strong sign that development is already in progress. Companies rarely finalize names unless the product is close to completion or testing stages.

For now, the HMD (Chrome)Book CS-1 Flip remains unannounced, but interest is quickly growing. If HMD truly introduces its first laptop under its own brand, it could mark a major milestone for the company and signal a new era in its product strategy. More leaks, images, or official teasers are likely to appear soon as HMD prepares for what might be one of its biggest launches yet.
