Suzanna Son is an American actress, musician, and model best known for her breakout role as Strawberry in Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed 2021 film Red Rocket. Her performance earned her nominations for a Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Performer and an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress, solidifying her status as a rising star in independent cinema.
Born in Hamilton, Montana, Son was raised in rural Washington state. She attended Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, initially studying classical music before shifting her focus to musical theatre. However, she chose to leave college during her second year, paving the way for an unconventional path into acting and entertainment.
Son’s major break came in 2018 when director Sean Baker spotted her outside a screening in Hollywood and encouraged her to audition for an upcoming project. Though she didn’t hear back for two years, Baker eventually cast her in Red Rocket (2021), in which she portrayed a teenage girl entangled in a complicated relationship with a washed-up adult film actor. Despite the film being her first major role, Son delivered a powerful and nuanced performance that captivated critics and audiences alike.
