Seenu Ramasamy (born 13 October 1973) is an acclaimed Indian film director, screenwriter, and poet who primarily works in Tamil cinema. He is best known for helming thought-provoking and socially grounded films such as Thenmerku Paruvakaatru (2010), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, Neerparavai (2012), Dharma Durai (2016), and Maamanithan (2022). Known for his realistic storytelling and emotional depth, Seenu has carved a niche for himself in the Tamil film industry with his simple yet powerful narratives.
Seenu made his directorial debut with Koodal Nagar in 2007 but rose to prominence with Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, a film praised for its screenplay, character development, and realism. Neerparavai, which explored the life of a fishing community, was also well-received for its poignancy and authenticity. His following project, Idam Porul Yaeval, though anticipated, faced production delays and remains unreleased. Dharma Durai, starring Vijay Sethupathi, had a polarizing critical reception but proved successful at the box office, further solidifying Seenu’s reputation as a commercially viable filmmaker with a distinct voice.
Continuing his collaboration with actor Vijay Sethupathi, Seenu directed Kanne Kalaimaane in 2019, a film that received mixed reviews for its underwhelming script despite its thematic potential. His 2022 film Maamanithan, a collaboration with music maestro Ilaiyaraaja and his sons, was noted for its soulful storytelling and music. In addition to filmmaking, Seenu Ramasamy is also known for his literary pursuits, especially poetry, making him a unique presence in Indian cinema where artistic expression often crosses over multiple forms.
