Samrat Chakrabarti (born 22 August 1975) is a British-American film actor and musician of Indian descent. Born in London to Bengali immigrant parents from Kolkata, he was raised in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was introduced to the rich cultural legacy of music, poetry, and the plays of Rabindranath Tagore through community performances. His passion for acting was evident from an early age, as he consistently participated in school plays and theatre productions.
Chakrabarti’s feature film debut came in 2004 with Spike Lee’s She Hate Me. Early in his career, he starred in films like The Wedding Weekend alongside Molly Shannon and Loins of Punjab Presents directed by Manish Acharya. His performance in The War Within earned critical acclaim, with the film being nominated for an Indie Spirit Award. Other notable projects include The Waiting City, Bombay Summer, and Kissing Cousins. He also appeared in the Bollywood film New York, produced by Yash Raj Films, and played a menacing gangster in Ashes, directed by Ajay Naidu. Chakrabarti will soon be seen in Murder in the Dark, produced by Chris Wyatt of Napoleon Dynamite fame.
In addition to his film work, Chakrabarti has an impressive television portfolio. He has appeared on critically acclaimed shows such as HBO’s In Treatment opposite Irrfan Khan, The Sopranos, and FX’s Damages alongside Ted Danson. His television credits also include roles in 30 Rock, Bored to Death, Blue Bloods, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Love Monkey, and the soap opera All My Children. With his diverse body of work across film and television, Samrat Chakrabarti continues to be a dynamic presence in both Hollywood and independent cinema.
